It is with great sadness to share the news that our beloved husband, dad, grandpa and brother, Alan “Al” A. Nelson, age 67, passed away peacefully at his home on April 30, 2022, just the way he wanted it, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. He was born on February 2, 1955, in Menominee, MI, the son of Leon and LaVerne (Brix) Nelson. Al attended Goodrich High School and graduated in 1973. On September 17, 1977, he married Judith Hinz, in Nekimi, WI. He dedicated 40 long years working at Mercury Marine and happily retired in 2018.
Al cherished the simple things in life like catching up on his favorite shows with his wife, relaxing at home, and drinking a Jamison and coke on the backyard swing. He loved going to estate sales, flea markets, and auctions with Judy looking for antiques. Al had a love for classic cars, football, and dark chocolate. His real passion was Texas Holdem poker. He got the nickname “Trapper” from his poker yahoo buddies. The relationship with all his poker friends was truly cherished. After overcoming his fear of flying, he even got the chance to take a couple of trips to Las Vegas, which was his lifelong dream. Al was a genuinely kind and smart man, who was always full of good advice. He never took life for granted and knew how precious his time here was. He will be dearly missed by his family and those who were lucky to have known him.
Al is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Jason (Gail Biermann) Nelson; daughter, Jaclyn (Ben) Sheaffer; two grandchildren, Sophia and Ben Sheaffer; six brothers, Randy (Cheri), Kerry (Mary), Erick, Chris (Kelly), Keith, and Craig Nelson; five sisters, Andreas Nelson, Lynn (Mike) Conley, Michele (Dennis) Haensgan, Mary Beth Shepherd, and Valerie (Jason Schroeder) Klebs; mother-in-law, Anita Hinz; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sharon Schultz, Shirley (Fred) Sonnenberg, and Al (Val) Hinz; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dawn Nelson; father-in-law, Reuben Hinz; and brother-in-law, Ron Schultz.
At Al’s request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
The family would like to extend a thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Cancer Center and SSM Hospice Hope for their care and compassion to Al.
Services are in the care of Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 North Park Avenue, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935. Additional information and guestbook can be found at ueckerwitt.com
