On Thursday, March 10, 2011, Alice L. Bergman Oelke Schuman, 58, died surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born December 2, 1952, in Fond du Lac, the daughter of Wynn and Shirley McGrath Bergman. She was a 1971 graduate of L.P. Goodrich High School. On April 14, 1973, she married Steve Oelke in Fond du Lac. She later married Royal Schuman in December of 1998 and he preceded her in death in 2000. Her longtime companion, Jeff Nickels, also preceded her in death in 2010. Alice was currently employed at Younkers as a dock manager. Prior to this, she had worked at Piggly-Wiggly for 15 years. Alice was known to all as a very "spirited" woman with a crazy sense of humor. Even in the end, her humor was very much a part of sustaining all of us. She was always there for her friends and family in need. She loved crafting and baking with her grandkids and creating lasting memories for them. In years past, she enjoyed playing softball as well as bowling. She was always fun to be with and will be sadly missed. Surviving are two daughters, Kelly (Jude) Mengel and Toni (Companion Keith Abler) Oelke, both of Fond du Lac, three grandchildren, Taylor Torgersen, and Sam and Max Mengel. She is further survived by five sisters, Mary Lewis of Rockford, IL, Gail Bittorf of Beloit, Nell Dymond of Ripon, Ruth Willett and Lori Renderman, both of Fond du Lac, six brothers, Danny Bergman and Tom Bergman, both of North Fond du Lac, Steve Bergman, Paul Bergman, and Bruce Bergman, all of Fond du Lac, and Harvey Bergman of Freemont, NB, her former husband, Steve Oelke, of Fond du Lac, and Jeff's daughter, Sarah Nickels, of Tennessee. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Her parents, second husband, Royal, her companion, Jeff, a brother, David Bergman, and a sister, Margaret Bergman, preceded her in death.
