Barbara A. Conroy passed away peacefully Saturday evening, February 26, 2022, at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du lac with her children and beloved husband, Thomas, at her bedside.
Barbara touched many people with her kindness, compassion, smile, and attention to the needs of others. Her charm and warm presence will be missed deeply by all who knew her well, but she also will be present with us always.
Barbara, 84, was born on May 10, 1937, in Milwaukee, the daughter of the late Nathalie Marie Krueger, and later moved to Fond du lac where she met the love of her life, Thomas Conroy. They were married on July 26, 1958, at St. Joseph’s Church and would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year after raising five children — who all went on to build successful careers, thanks to their parent’s sacrifices, support, and guidance.
Barbara also was tireless in the pursuit of her dreams and managed to balance her devotion to family while also returning to school in the early 1970s to earn an LPN nursing degree. She went on to work as a nurse at St. Agnes Hospital for years, retiring from the profession to pursue her many other passions in life. — among them travel, painting and spending time with her husband and their many friends and family.
Barbara enjoyed visiting and nurturing her seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, who reside in Wisconsin, Washington, California, and Texas, and she was looking forward to welcoming her fifth great grandchild in June. She had a creative side as well and was an accomplished artist who shared her paintings with many friends and family.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Thomas; sons, William (Teddi), Michael (Cristina), Kevin (deceased, but present with us always, married to Sue), and Timothy (who made it possible for her and Thomas to travel the world); her beautiful daughter, Colleen (Dave) Wermuth; and her grandchildren Kira, Quinn, Devin, Karl, Andrea, Daniel, and Gabriel. Barbara also is survived by her sisters, Eileen Steffen, Mary Lou (Harvin) Miller, and Sharon Morris; and a sister-in-law, Noel Buetow. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William, and Kenneth (Noel) Buetow; her sisters, Grace (Chuck) Shafer and Jeanette (Tom) Hill; brothers-in-law, Denny Steffen, Daniel Conroy, Robert Schwartz, and Richard Morris; and her nephew, Todd Buetow.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM, Monday, March 7, 2022, at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow, beginning at 5:00 PM. Cremation has taken place. Private family inurnment at Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery will be held at a later date.
The family extends great gratitude to the nurses on Five West and the Hospice Services program at St. Agnes Hospital. We also ask that in lieu of flowers or other gifts that a donation be made in Barbara Conroy’s name to Agnesian HealthCare Foundation Inc. (and directed to SSM Health Hospice Services); or to the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research in support of its Alzheimer’s disease research.
Barbara was an avid reader in her spare time and always had an open mind and a thirst for knowledge. In that spirit, among the thoughts her daughter Colleen, a teacher, wanted to share with everyone in relation to her mother and the way she lived her life is the following: What matters most at the end of our lives is how well we loved, how fully we lived and how deeply we let go when our time comes. Barbara met that test and more. She lived her life with great enthusiasm and love and left this world on her own terms. Her spirit will live on in our hearts and minds and in the generations to come.
