Barbara B. Schaefer

August 28, 1932 — February 9, 2021

Barbara Berit (Case) Schaefer, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Woodlands Senior Park following complications due to COVID-19. Barb was born on August 28, 1932 to Glen and Randi (Petterson) Case. She grew up in Fond du Lac and graduated from Goodrich High School in 1950. On February 3, 1951 she married her high school sweetheart, Meinrad “Meinie” Schaefer. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage until Meinie’s passing on May 13, 2003.

After graduation, Barb worked as the school secretary at Waters Elementary School in Fond du Lac. When Meinie entered the Army, Barb moved with him to Augusta, GA for his basic training. Barb remained there while Meinie was stationed in Korea during the war. After his tour of duty, Barb and Meinie returned to Fond du Lac and started a family. She was a full-time mom to her four children, Mark, Jean, Mike, and Cathie. She was a loving and patient parent and worked hard to give her children a wonderful childhood.

After her children were grown, Barb went to work at A.C. Nielsen for over 10 years. In addition, she volunteered at St. Agnes Hospital for the patient transport program. She especially enjoyed transporting the newborns and their moms when they were released from the hospital. Barb also volunteered in ministry services at the ManorCare Nursing Home. She always took time to talk with the residents, never wanting to leave anyone out. Barb was very thoughtful and kind-hearted in this way.

Barb had a special talent for crocheting, cross stitch, and needlepoint. She made beautiful afghans, Christmas stockings, and wall hangings that are cherished by her family. She liked doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles and word finds. Barb also was an avid bird watcher and especially enjoyed seeing robins, cardinals, orioles, and finches at the bird feeders in her yard. Her beautiful Owen Gromme bird prints hanging throughout her home brought her great joy.

Barb loved being a grandmother and spending time with her grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Lohrengel. She cherished her great grandson, Anthony who brought her great pleasure and lots of smiles in recent years.

Survivors include her children, Mark (Jeane) Schaefer of Stuart, FL, Jean Schaefer of Fond du Lac, Michael “Spike” (Anne) Schaefer of Fond du Lac, and Cathie Lohrengel of Shawano; grandchildren, Ryan Lohrengel of Shawano and Rachel Lohrengel of Miami, FL; great grandson, Anthony Lohrengel; sister, Lynne (Case) Rodman; brother-in-law, Fred Schaefer; sister-in-law, Ann Marie Schaefer; as well as many nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Glenn, Jim, and Jeff Case; brother-in-law, Donald Schaefer; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Schaefer.

The family extends special thanks to the entire staff at Woodlands Senior Park and Agnesian Hospice for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to Salvation Army of Fond du Lac or the Fond du Lac Humane Society in Barb’s name.

Private family burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
