Benjamin A. Merkel, age 92, of Fond du Lac, died Sunday, May 8, 2016. He was born on May 5, 1924 in Marshfield, the son of Benedict and Anna (Martin) Merkel. Ben served in the 1st Calvary in the United States Army from February 1945 until February of 1946 stationed in the Pacific Theater. On March 1, 1949 he married Catherine Hornick at St. Michaels in Hewitt, WI. She preceded him in death on October 6, 2008. He worked for the City of Fond du Lac for thirty four years until retiring in 1986. Ben was a member of Holy Family Parish, Knights of Columbus Council 9685; he ushered and was very involved with St. Louis Church for many years. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and crafts. In 2013 Ben went on the Honor Flight with his son Tom. Ben’s children meant the world to him.
SURVIVORS: three sons, Thomas (Sue) Merkel of Eldorado, Paul (Colleen) Merkel of Fond du Lac, Mike (special friend Roberta) Merkel of Fond du Lac; six daughters, Marlene (Bob) Freville of Sheboygan Falls, Ann (Ken) Reinke of Fond du Lac, Rose (Mark) Lefeber of Fond du Lac, Julie (Joe) Giebel of Beaver Dam, Teresa (Ed) Comparon of Mansfield, TX, and Barbara (Joel) Kroll of Fond du Lac; twenty grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Brock of Marshfield; one sister-in-law, Agnes Merkel of Marshfield; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers; two sisters.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 3-7 P.M. at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church-Holy Family, 200 S. Peters Ave, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935. Visitation will also take place on Monday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services. Entombment will follow at Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery.
