Charles (Chuck) Egli, 79, peacefully passed away at home on October 30, 2017 and into the arms of the Lord after an 11 month battle with lung cancer. He was born on March 31, 1938 at his parents’ cheese factory in the Montello/Dalton area. He was the only son of Henry and Cora (Von Allman) Egli. As a boy, Chuck enjoyed helping at the family cheese factory after school by making cheese boxes while listening to Superman on the radio. Sadly, he lost his father when he was 12 years old, but he never forgot all of the good times they shared together. His father taught him the values of trusting in God, being honest, and working hard. These same values Chuck has also passed on to his son.
In 1951, Chuck’s mother Cora married Arthur Warnke, and together the family moved to Fond du Lac. It is here that he attended Elizabeth Waters Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, and L.P. Goodrich High School, where he graduated in 1957. After graduation, Chuck was employed as a journeyman machinist at G&L’s Davis Plant, and later was the manager of Aladdin’s Castle at the Forest Mall, where he retired after 24 years. He also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. After retirement, he enjoyed working part-time with his friends at Shooter’s Club and the Backstage Bar.
Chuck always loved playing pool, in the beginning at the Palladium Pool Hall, and later playing in leagues for the D&D, Carp’s Corner, and Shooter’s Club. He made many friends as a great teammate and outstanding player.
On September 24, 1960, Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Virginia (Ginger) Graves at St. Joseph’s Church in Fond du Lac. They had just celebrated 57 wonderful years together. Chuck is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginger), son, Mike (Lori) Egli, and two grandsons, Tyler and Andrew Egli, all of Fond du Lac. He is also survived by one half-brother, John Kunz of Beaver Dam, a sister-in-law Pat Graves, niece Michele (Susan) Heinbigner, nephew Kurt (Jill) Heinbigner, all of MN, and many cousins and friends.
Chuck will be remembered by his family and friends as a fun-loving person. He always had a positive attitude, smile on his face, and jolly laugh. When asked how he was doing, Chuck’s answer was always “Perfect.” He enjoyed gatherings with family and friends, bus trips with Blanck’s and Jim & Linda’s, and sitting on his deck enjoying a Budweiser with his wife of 57 years, reminiscing about all their good times.
He was preceded in death by his father Henry Egli, mother Cora Warnke, step-father Arthur Warnke, two half-sisters Cora Jean (Kunz) Moylan and Mary Kunz, father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Annette Graves, brother-in-law Lenny Heinbigner, and many aunts and uncles.
The celebration of his life will begin with visitation on Friday, November 3, 2017, from 9:30-11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 271 Fourth Street Way, Fond du Lac. Funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at Rienzi Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Fond du Lac, Agnesian HealthCare’s Hospice Hope, or a charity of your choice. Our family is so grateful for all the love, prayers, and support we have received over the past 11 months from family, friends, neighbors, and fellow workers. We are also thankful for the many nurses and doctors at St. Agnes Hospital, Agnesian Cancer Center, and Hospice Hope, as well as the nurses and doctors at Froedtert Medical Center, especially Dr. George Hassler and special friend Andy Land.
A Fallen Limb
A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I keep hearing a voice that says, "Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song.
The good life I lived while I was strong.
Continue my heritage, I'm counting on you.
Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest.
Remembering all, how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions, no matter how small.
Go on with your life, don't worry about falls
I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes we're together again.
