Charlotte Hamilton McEssyCharlotte Hamilton McEssy, 90, formerly of 361 Forest Avenue, died Thursday, January 6, 2005, at ManorCare Nursing Home. She was born April 11, 1914, in Fond du Lac, a daughter of Herbert F. and Lottie May Briggs Hamilton. She graduated from Fond du Lac High School in 1932. While in high school, she made snow pants for neighbor children who couldn't afford them. She made them out of winter coats given to her. At 5 am on December 25, 1942, she was united in marriage to Earl F. McEssy by Monsignor Henry Riordan at St. Joseph's Church. Mrs. McEssy was a member of Holy Family Parish and a charter member of Sacred Heart Church. She was a former teacher and administrator in the Fond du Lac County rural school system for over 35 years. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Oshkosh Normal School in 1936. She later attended the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where she received Masters Degrees in Education and Reading. Mrs. McEssy also attended the University of Oslo, where she studied Special Education involving dyslexia. Her memberships included the International Reading Association, the Rock River Reading Association, the Oshkosh Reading Association, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Educare Alumni, the Fond du Lac County Republican Party, the Daughters of Isabella, Delta Kappa Gamma, a women's educational honor society, Trier-Puddy American Legion Post #75 Auxiliary, Ladies of the Elks, Fond du Lac County Area Retired Educators Association, the Knights of Columbus Council #664 and Eagles Aerie #270 Auxiliaries. After her retiring in 1982 from Waupun Middle School, she continued to teach reading to adults with Laubach Literacy. Surviving is a daughter Colleen (Donald) Kreuser of Greenfield, two sons, James F. McEssy and John D. McEssy of Drasco, AR, eight grandchildren, Kelly and Jim McEssy of California, Deborah (Phil) Guerty of Bloomington, IN, Kristi Lee McEssy of Las Vegas, NV, Cindy (Cody) Bright of Gaffney, SC, Joseph (fiancé' Nicole McKenzie) of New Berlin, WI, and John and Courtney Kreuser of Greenfield, WI, two great-granddaughters, Casey Jo and Bailey McEssy, and a special "grandmother" to Nicole and Joe. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Her parents, husband, a granddaughter, Kerry May McEssy, a brother, John Hamilton, three sisters-in-law, Fern Hautzinger, Eileen Liner, and Marguerite McEssy, and three brothers-in-law, John Hautzinger, Ambrose Liner, and Hazen McEssy, and her companion, Maggie, preceded her in death.
Visitation for Mrs. Charlotte Hamilton McEssy will be on Monday, January 10, 2005, from 4 to 8 pm, and on Tuesday, January 11 from 9 to 10 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at 10 am at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Sacred Heart Church. The Rev. Victor Capriolo will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Mrs. McEssy's name.
