Constance Marie Konen, 88, of Fond du Lac, passed away at the Hospice Home of Hope on May 12. 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Fond du Lac on May 10, 1924, the daughter of Thomas U. and Maude E. Crist Adams. As a young adult, Connie spent many summer days at Taylor Park with her friends, eventually becoming a life guard. Connie would tell us she learned a lot at (TPU) Taylor Park University. Connie graduated from Goodrich High School in June of 1942. During her senior year, she met her soul mate, Eugene C. Konen. He enlisted in the Army in January of 1943. Their relationship continued by mail. After Eugene's discharge in October of 1945, the couple united in marriage on May 11, 1946. Mother worked at numerous dry goods stores prior to starting her employment with Ma-Bell as an operator in 1952. She retired in 1984 as an engineer with AT&T. She was a member of the AT&T Pioneers. Eugene and Connie retired to Coral Springs, Florida, where they resided for 26 years. In 2010, she and her husband moved back to Fond du Lac. Connie was an advocate for nursing home reform, writing many letters to past Presidents, Congressmen, Senators, and editorials to newspapers and TV stations. Mother loved her home, gardening, bird watching, and spending time with family and friends. Connie was an awesome wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Konen, four children, Gregory (Cindy) Konen, Jacalyn (Warren Deibert) Konen, Lynnette (Thomas) Benedict, and Mary (Danny) Applebaum, six grandchildren, Jessica (Alan) Challoner, Krista (Mark) Ellis, Kelsey and Bryce Benedict, and Alex and Ava Applebaum, and three great-grandchildren, Owen Challoner, and Jack and Olivia Ellis. Connie is further survived by sister-in-laws Irma Bredlau, Jean Tautges, and Bernita Rockweit, many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends, neighbors from Fond du Lac and Coral Springs. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Gwendolyn Wilderman, in-laws, Christ and Della Konen, sister-in-laws, Hazel North, Bernice Konen, brother-in-laws, Irvin Konen, Delmer Konen, and numerous friends and classmates.
Per Connie's wishes, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may call at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Avenue, on May 21, 2012, from 4 to 8 PM, and again on Tuesday, May 22nd from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary's Church, 59 E. Merrill Avenue, Fond du Lac. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 22nd at the church. Inurnment of cremated remains will be in Rienzi Cemetery.
