David Haack

December 8, 1935 — July 13, 2024

David Haack, our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 13, 2024, with his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen Sage Haack, by his side.

David was born on December 8, 1935, at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac, Wis. His parents, David and Ruth, owned a home in the village of North Fond du Lac, WI, where David grew up. As a youth, you could often find David hunting, fishing, and participating in sports.

A gifted athlete, David played basketball, baseball, and football, often attaining MVP status. He attended St. Mary’s Springs Academy, graduating in the class of 1954. David was the life of the party and had many friends. He had a great sense of humor and an admired style. He was always exceptionally dressed, pressed, and manicured.

David attended UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse and served in the United States Army.

After graduation, David and Mary Ellen were married on July 23, 1959, at Presentation Catholic Church, North Fond du Lac, WI, where they were devoted parishioners as they raised their three children, Dawn, Michael, and Timothy.

During his career, David was employed with the Chicago and North Western Railroad as a conductor and then the United Transportation Union as General Chairman. David served successfully as a union representative and advocate for his railroad brothers.

The couple traveled extensively during this time, and eventually, the union position took David and Mary Ellen to Wauwatosa, WI. They enjoyed traveling for business and pleasure, golfing, playing cards, and spending time with their granddaughters Courtney and Gabrielle. The Haacks moved back to Fond du Lac in 1999. David coined ‘the mayor’ of Kennedy Drive, enjoyed being in close proximity to Dawn and her family.

David enjoyed working in the yard with his wife, doing odd jobs around the house, and having a beverage on the patio at happy hour. He had a keen mind and wit and could recall dates and times, names and places as he told stories of his travels, youth, and experiences on the railroad.

David is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Haack; his children, Dawn and Brian Kennedy, Tim and Molly Haack; and his grandchildren, Courtney and Ryan Kreklow, Gabrielle Kennedy, Amanda and Garth Schumacher, Jillian and Darin Tuttle, and Cody Stafford. His legacy will be remembered by his six great-grandchildren, Kane and Elaina Schumacher, Lucy Schumacher, Hudson Schumacher and Lydia, Lincoln and Lennon Tuttle.

David was preceded in death by his parents, David and Ruth Agnes Haack, sisters Darlene Haack Racinowski and Patricia Haack Gratton, and son, Michael David Haack.
