Dorothy L. Thorpe, 90, formerly of 294 Taft Street, and currently a resident of the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home for the past year, died Friday, November 5, 2010, at her residence. She was born December 16, 1919, in Fond du Lac, the daughter of Wendell and Rose Heider Miller. She was a 1937 graduate of Fond du Lac High School. On April 4, 1942, she married Donald F. Thorpe in San Francisco. He preceded her in death in 2003. Dorothy and her husband celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2002. She was involved in many sports and the YMCA during her lifetime, and was an avid golfer. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Dorothy was employed by Crosby & Crosby Insurance Agency after graduating from high school. After her marriage and the birth of her children, she was employed in the office of Dr. Jay R. Schauer as secretary-bookkeeper for 12 years, retiring in 1985. She is survived by four daughters, Donna (LeRoy) Elmer of Madison, Kerry (Steve) Sheridan, Jo Ellen (Gary) Wischnewski, Robin (Terry) Fink, and a son, Paul Thorpe, all of Fond du Lac, 19 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren, She is further survived by a sister, Joyce (Conrad) Schneider of Fond du Lac, two sisters-in law, Jeanne Cruciani of Fond du Lac, and Barbara Miller of Ripon, many nieces and nephews, and special friends Carl (Gertrude) Lilge of Fond du Lac. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, mother and fathers-in-law, two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Mischo and Kathryn "Jean" Leitner, two brothers, Franklin and John Miller, three sisters-in-law, Janet LaBorde, Annabelle Miller, and Joyce Thorpe, and five brothers-in-law, Frederick Mischo, Garrett LaBorde, Peter Cruciani, Robert Leitner, and Kenneth Thorpe, Sr.
Visitation for Dorothy L. Thorpe will be on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, from 9 to 11 AM at Salem United Methodist Church, 120 Sheboygan Street, Fond du Lac. Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Wednesday at the church. The Reverend Jack Stubbs will officiate. Following a time of brief refreshments and socialization, the immediate family will gather for private graveside services in Rienzi Cemetery. Uecker-Witt Funeral is in charge of arrangements.
