Eugene Christ Konen

May 27, 1923 — April 20, 2016

Eugene Christ Konen, 92, of Fond du Lac, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Manor Care Nursing Home. He was born in Fond du Lac, May 27, 1923, the son of Christian and Della Ziegelbauer Konen. Eugene attended Goodrich High School and graduated in June 1943. In January of 1943 during his senior year Eugene joined the Army. Eugene was a Heavy Machine Gunner with Company ‘C’ in the 707th Tank Battalion in the European-African and Middle Eastern Theatre earning a Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medals. After his discharge October 17, 1945 he joined his father Christ and brother Delmer at Konen’s Mobil Gas Station on the corner of Rees and Main Street in Fond du Lac. On May 11, 1946 Eugene married his High School sweetheart Constance Marie Adams at St. Mary’s Church. Eugene left Konen’s Mobil Gas Station August 24, 1972 to start work at Mercury Marine retiring June 21, 1985.

Eugene was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Fond du Lac Eagles Aerie #270 and Town of Fond du Lac as a Volunteer Fire Fighter. He organized friendly horseshoe matches between other township’s Fire Departments. Many Tuesday nights we could hear the clanging of the horseshoes and a lot of laughter late into the night. Eugene and Connie hosted many picnics, parties and sheepshead card games with friends and family. Eugene loved to play tricks and tell jokes. Very seldom would one not see dad with a smile or as some would say a s*** grin on his face. Dad and his friends could create anything with a few nuts and bolts. Dad kept things around just in case someone needed it for a project. After retirement Eugene and Constance retired to Coral Springs Florida where they resided for 26 years. May 2010 Eugene and Constance moved back to Fond du Lac to be closer to family.

Dad was a loving husband, son, father and friend. He leaves behind his four children, Gregory (Cindy) Konen, Jacalyn (Warren Deibert) Konen, Lynnette (Thomas) Benedict and Mary (Dan) Applebaum; six grandchildren, Jessica (Alan) Challoner, Krista (Mark) Ellis, Kelsey, Bryce Benedict, Alex and Ava Applebaum; three great grandchildren, Owen Challoner, Jack and Olivia Ellis. Eugene is further survived by his sister, Irma Bredlau; many nephews, nieces and wonderful friends who loved and adored him. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; his in laws, Thomas and Maude Crist Adams his wife, Constance; brothers, Irvin and Delmer Konen; sisters, Hazel North, his twin, Jean Tautges and Bernita Rockweit; sister-in-laws, Gwendolyn Wilderman and Bernice Konen; and many friends and classmates.

Eugene will be missed dearly. The family would like to thank all of those that took care of him during his time in Fond du Lac.
