Eugene F. “Duke” Schneider, 88, of Neshkoro, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. He was born in Fond du Lac on July 27, 1930, the son of Jacob and Molly (Schuppe) Schneider. On September 29, 1951, he married Shirley Steffes in Fond du Lac.
Eugene served in the U.S. Navy (USN) from 1947 – 1949. Stationed at United States Naval Air Station (USNAS) Glenview in Glenview, Ill., he attained the rank of Airman Apprentice (AA) before receiving an honorable discharge in 1949.
Eugene worked at the Railroad in North Fond du Lac for 35 years retiring in 1990, having begun as a welder and retiring as a car shops manager. After his retirement, he and Shirley moved to Neshkoro and spent every winter in Pine Island, Fla. Eugene was a member of the Greater Pine Island Elks Lodge # 2781, American Legion Post # 136, VFW Men’s Auxiliary # 2000342883, and the Pine Island Moose Lodge #1954. He spent his Monday mornings golfing at Two Oaks North in Wautoma and was an avid Packers, Badgers, Brewers and Bucks fan. Eugene also enjoyed many special family traditions with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He and his family spent much of their time at the family cottage on Tuttle Lake in Neshkoro. Eugene enjoyed his monthly gatherings with other railroad retirees, was a regular attendee at St. James Catholic Church in Neshkoro and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; three children, Sharon (Calvin) Lewis, Peggy (Peter) Guell and Tom Schneider, all of Fond du Lac; three grandchildren, Sarah (Colin) Salter of Eden, Meghan (Jared) Beggs of Fond du Lac and Hillary Schneider of Waukesha; three great-grandchildren, Grace and Zoey Salter of Eden and Breckin Beggs of Fond du Lac; and four grand-dogs. Eugene is further survived by two brothers, Jerome (Rosemary) Schneider of Fond du Lac and James Schneider of Coon Rapids, Minn.; three sisters-in-law, Marge Steffes of Baraboo, Marian (Don) Bestor of Fond du Lac, and Elizabeth (Joseph) Koll of Fond du Lac; a brother-in-law, Jerry (Gayle) Steffes of Fond du Lac; numerous beloved nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Molly Schneider; and a brother-in-law, Don Steffes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Monday, December 3, 2018 at Holy Family - Sacred Heart Church, 200 S. Peters Ave. in Fond du Lac. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 PM. Following Mass, burial will take place in St. Charles Cemetery with military funeral honors presented by the U.S. Navy and American Legion Trier-Puddy Post #75.
