Frank "T.J." Scannell

Frank "T.J." Scannell died Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born on May 5, 1930 to Edward and Adelle Faris Scannell in Fond du Lac. After graduating from St. Joseph's grade school, and St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, he became a Capuchin Franciscan priest in 1956. He was assigned to teaching, parish work, administration, and various chaplaincies: St. Lawrence Seminary, St. Benedict the Moor Mission, St, Francis Friary parish, St. Anthony Hospital, and Milwaukee City and County Jail and Morgue. While chaplain at St. Vincent's Group Home in Milwaukee, he was offered a fellowship at Louisiana State University, graduating with a Master's degree in Psychiatric Social Work with honors. During this time, he was chaplain at the University's Catholic Student Center, student therapist at L.S.U. Student Health Service, Associate Director of THE PHONE (a suicide and crisis telephone service), consultant to the International Students Program, and Director of the University's Outreach Program, living off campus in Baton Rouge's drug area where he provided 24 hour "drop-in rap counseling." In 1972, he resigned his positions in the church and university and began a private practice in individual, marital, and family therapy, later receiving his doctorate in Clinical Psychology. In 1975, he married Teresa Freismuth and together they worked in his counseling center in Baton Rouge, LA, transferring to Fond du Lac in 1976, where he also worked at the Fond du Lac County Mental Health Center, was consultant at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, St. Francis Nursing Home, Compassionate Friends, counselors of Brooke Industries, and developed Divorce Support Groups with St. Agnes Hospital. Survivors include his soul mate and wife, Teresa, brothers Fr. Anthony of Los Angeles, CA, Ed of Tempe, AZ, and sister Anne Wood of Mesa, AZ. He is further survived by two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Freismuth and Ann (Dan) Krug, both of Fond du Lac. His parents, two sisters-in-law, Joyce Freismuth and Monica Freismuth, and two brothers-in-law, Donald and Martin Freismuth, preceded him in death.



Visitation for Frank "T.J." Scannell will be on Friday, August 13, 2010, from 4 to 8 pm at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, and on Saturday, August 14th, from 9:30 to 10 AM at Holy Family Church, 271 4th Street Way, Fond du Lac. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday at the church. The Rev. Anthony Scannell, Capuchin, Frank's brother will officiate and entombment will be in the Chapel of The Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Frank's name.
