Frederick A. "Fred" Mathwig, 65, of St. Peter, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007, at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born November 13, 1941, in Fond du Lac, the son of Arthur and Helen Ruplinger Mathwig. On September 19, 1970, he married Marlene M. Birschbach in Mt. Calvary. He was a graduate of Goodrich High School. Fred retired in August 1997 after 31 years of devoted and committed years with the Fond du Lac C0unty Sheriff's Department. He began his career as a Patrol Officer in 1966, was promoted to Sergeant in 1979, and Lieutenant in 1984. Fred retired at the rank of Lieutenant and served as the Shift Commander of the day shift at the time of his retirement. He assisted in forming the Sheriff's Department S.W.A.T. Team in 1981 and served as Team Leader until 1993. Fred was a stable force in the Law Enforcement Community. Prior to his retirement, he was formerly employed by Olsen's Service Station, and after retiring, he was employed part-time by Badger Auto Auction. Surviving is his wife, Marlene, five sisters-in-law, Carol (Ron) Entringer of Mt. Calvary, Jane (Mike) Wahoske and Ruth (Gary) Schoenbeck, both of Fond du Lac, Mabel (Steve) Wilke of Eden, and Kay Guelig of Mt. Calvary, two brothers-in-law, Dale (Arlene) Birschbach of St. Peter, and Lynn (Peggy) Birschbach of Mt. Calvary, and his mother-in-law, Gladys Birschbach of Fond du Lac. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. His parents, two sisters, an infant brother, and his father-in-law, preceded him in death.
Visitation for Frederick A. "Fred" Mathwig will be on Friday, January 12, 2007, from 3 to 8 pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mt. Calvary, and on Saturday, January 13, from 9 to 10:30 am at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Saturday at the church. The Rev. Gerry Pehler O F M Cap.will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Fond du Lac. A memorial has been established in Fred's name. Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is serving the family.
