Gary L. Wendel, 60, of Enderlin, ND, died Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND. He was born August 6, 1955 in Fond du Lac, the son of Jerome and Janice Wettstein Wendel. On September 14, 1979 he married Sharon Volkaitis in Fond du Lac. Gary worked as a conductor for the Soo Line Railroad and Canadian Pacific Railway for 30 years. He was highly regarded by his union brothers for his work as the local chairman in Iowa and North Dakota. Gary loved spending time with family and friends and always made everyone laugh. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family, loved cooking, the Green Bay Packers, collected coins and antique glassware and realized his dream of owning a red mustang.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Sharon Wendel of Enderlin, ND; his parents, Jerry and Jan Wendel of Fond du Lac; two sons, Michael Wendel of Enderlin, ND and A.J. (Denice) Wendel of Fond du Lac; one sister, Sharon (Tom) Fisher of Mayville; his best friend, Brian Budreau who was like a brother; four stepchildren, Scott (Renae) Volkaitis of Fond du Lac, Robin (Andy) Schmitz of Malone, Christi (John) Bartelak of Burlington, and Dan (Laura) Volkaitis of Palmyra; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Claude and Frances Wendel and Jake and Hattie Wettstein.
The visitation will be held from 12:30 – 2:30 pm on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery.
