Genevieve M. Burke, 90, of Fond du Lac, loving mother of Kristine Shoemaker, died Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Hospice Home of Hope. She was born May 18, 1923, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Meyer. She was a graduate of Juneau High School in Milwaukee. On October 13, 1945, she married William J. "Bill" Burke in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1999. In 1954, she and her husband moved to Fond du Lac to run the J.E. Burke Company. Gen was known as a "behind the scenes" driving force of the J.E. Burke Company. Genevieve enjoyed knitting, sewing, making stained glass, cooking, baking, and traveling with her husband, especially to warm exotic locales. Above all, she was a blackjack fanatic known throughout Wisconsin and Las Vegas casinos as "double-down Genny." She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Kristine Shoemaker and her son-in-law, Terry, of Fond du Lac, and a sister, Betty Schunemann of Milwaukee. Other survivors include Gregory and Thomas Burke, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and her many friends throughout the community. She will be especially missed by her dog, Pudlin, the Standard Poodle. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister, Marie Grube.
Visitation for Genevieve M. Burke will be on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, from 9 to 11 AM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 AM at the funeral home on Wednesday. Deacon Michael Hackbarth will officiate. Cremation will follow the traditional services. Inurnment of cremated remains will be in Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield, WI.
