George H. Ottery, 90, of Fond du Lac passed away on June 22, 2011, at the St. Francis Home. He was born in the Town of Empire, Fond du Lac County, on January 27, 1921, the son of the late George and Angelique Senecal Ottery. George was a 1938 graduate of L.P. Goodrich High School. After graduation he continued in the family farming operation for over 30 years. He was very proud of his farming heritage and the farm being in the family for over 100 years before it was sold. Farming was only one of the passions George pursued as he served the public in many roles throughout his lifetime. He was proud to serve as Town Chairman of the Town of Empire for many years and had many stories of plowing snow with his son George as his wingman. He also served on the County Board of Supervisors during two different periods as a representative from the Town of Empire in the 60's and the City of Fond du Lac from 1984 to 2002. He was proud to serve with his father on the County Board as the first Father/Son duo on the Board in the early 60's. George also held positions as Fond du Lac County Register of Deed's from 1971 to 1983 being a staunch member of the Republican Party and Fond du Lac County Fair Secretary & Manager from 1967 to 1994. As Fair Secretary & Manager he was instrumental in bringing top name entertainment to the grandstand.In his retirement years he was well known around the County Courthouse as he occasionally stopped by to joke with the staff, especially Joyce Buechel in the County Clerk's Office. He and his wife Elaine spent many years wintering in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida at Cliff Lake Villas, where he served as President of the Condominium Association for many years carrying out the many responsibilities for the owners. While in Florida during the winter months he loved to play golf, watch football, play cards, go out to dinner, sit by the pool with Elaine, and the friends he referred to as his extended family. George especially liked solving the worlds many problems with his good friend Bob Bishop.During the summer months George was an avid fisherman. Fishing many summer days with his buddy Bob Mcauly and was well known by many anglers on Lake Winnebago. As many may agree, where George and Bob were anchored there were always perch to be caught. He also made many fishing trips to Canada and Lake Erie with his sons and friends. All these fishing adventures and trips provide great memories for those who had the privilege to be with George on them. George was proud to be a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #57 which he was a member for 68 years. He loved to play cards with what he referred to as 'the boys' at lunch, shake dice, and bowl in the Thursday night 3 man league where he bowled for 66 years. George leaves behind his loving wife, Elaine who has been his companion for 28 years.Survivors also include Joyce Ottery of Fond du Lac, his sons John (Jeanine) Ottery, of Norfolk Virginia, Michael (Sharon) Ottery/Jones of Fond du Lac; his daughters Elizabeth (Marshall) Ottery/Linde of Wisconsin Rapids, Susan Ottery of Fond du Lac; his grandchildren Kim (Fiance'Jerry) Brunzelle, Margaret (Shane) Snyder, Kelli Jo Ottery, Peter (Heather) Ottery; his great grand children Alexis and Emma Brunzelle, Owen and Gavin Snyder, Bradley Ottery; his sister-in-law Darlene Ottery; his daughter-in-law Sandy Berken-Ottery his brother-in-law Buddy (Margaret) Oechsner; his step children Sean (Jodi) Capen, Dawn (Brian) Bantleon, Cindy Capen; his step grandchildren Cameron Bantleon, Cory Bantleon, Anna Capen, and Lilly Capen; niece Angie (Tom) Doyle; and other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Francis McCullough/Ottery, his brother David Ottery, his son George Ottery Jr., his father-in-laws, George Bingen and Arnold Oechsner, his mother-in-laws, Elsie Bingen and Edna Oechsner.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011, from 8:30 to 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 678 Western Avenue, Fond du Lac.Funeral Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 AM at the church. The Reverend Luke Strand will officiate and entombment will be in the Chapel of The Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery. Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Hospice Home of Hope or to the St. Francis Home.
