George R. Winter

George R. Winter, 86 years. died March 31st. 2006. in Fond du Lac, WI. He was born in Chicago. IL. on April 27, 1919. to George and Sue (Schiff1ey) Winter, the second of three children. On October 16, 1941, he married Margaret (Fields) in El Paso, TX. and they honeymooned in New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns. George was the father of three sons. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son David. and his brother Frederick. Raised in Christian Science, he retained lifelong commitment to the spirit of its principles and exhibited exuberance for enjoying life's blessings. As a young man he participated in scouting and school athletics. Respected for his organizing initiative and athletic prowess, he earned the nickname of 'Ace', a moniker he went by for the rest of his life. Having graduated from Chicago's Sullivan High School in 1937, he subsequently matriculated to Purdue University. In 1940 he was drafted into the US Army, forever after joking that was the only lottery he ever won. He was discharged in 1945, having attained the rank of Master Sergeant in the Army Air Corp. During his World War II service, he worked on Eisenhower's staff in England and later in Paris. Continuing his education after the war, he graduated from Northwestern University in 1951 with a degree in Accounting. He worked for US Castle Company for 20 years, eventually reaching the position of Treasurer. In 1964, he went to work at Sheffield Foundry, the largest independently owned grey iron foundry in the Midwest, located in Chicago's near north side. While there he led a leveraged buyout with two partners whose interest he eventually purchased. After moving from Rogers Park, IL, in 1952, the family made their home in suburban Park Ridge, IL, with stops in Skokie, Niles, IL, and Lorain, OH. An avid golfer his entire adult life, he belonged to several different country clubs including Medina and Park Ridge and Martin Downs in Palm City, FL. His 20-year retirement was spent in the Stuart, FL area, much of it playing golf and entertaining their many visitors. His greatest joy came from providing for and participating in the life of the family, to which his many friends through the years can attest. He'll be remembered for his wry sense of humor, his opinionated outspokenness, his love of life, and his commitment to work. Most of all, he'll be remembered as the good man who always stood-up and took responsibility. Through life he played the role of respectful son, the helpful sibling. the inquiring student, the courageous soldier, the loyal husband. the hard worker, the benevolent employer, the loving father, the caring grandfather, the good friend. the involved citizen. the proud grandfather, the esteemed great grandfather, an avuncular figure to whom the 'greatest generation' applies. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Marge; sons George (Mary Ann) Winter of Fond du Lac, WI, and James (Cheryl) Winter of Waterville, OH; daughter-in-law Dian Winter of Fond du Lac, WI; grandchildren Erin (Andy) Berry of Rosendale. WI, Allison (Bryan) Gamer of Oshkosh, WI, Dawn Winter of Overland Park., KS, Tim (Sarah) Winter of Hoffman Estates, and Mearte Winter of Waterville, OH; great grandchildren Steven and Maggie Berry, Boden and Piper Garner, and Kaleigh Winter; sister Carolyn (Robert) Morse of Northbrook, and sister- in-law Virginia Winter of Evanston, IL. George is also remembered with fondness by several nieces and nephews and former daughters-in law Sharon Winter of Arlington Heights, n., and Mimi Winter of Chicago, IL.



VISITATION: Saturday, April 8, 2006 from 10:30 A.M. until 12 noon at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. A service of remembrance will be held at the funeral home at 12 noon. Inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
