George Soter, 92, of Fond du Lac, passed away on June 9, 2021 at St. Agnes Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was born on March 16, 1929, in Fond du Lac, the son of Harry and Stamatia (Katayenes) Soter, who immigrated to Fond du Lac from Samos, Greece in 1928. George proudly served our country in the Army as a combat engineer in Korea from 1951-1953. He earned a bronze star for his service. After returning home from Korea, he worked for 33 years as an Engineer on the Soo Line Railroad from 1954, until his retirement in 1987. On May 6, 1966, George married Joy Roesler (nee Durrant) in Waukegan, IL. Together they had two daughters, Tracy and Maria. Joy also had a son, Grant from a previous marriage. His wife, Joy, sadly preceded him in death on April 19, 1998.
George loved watching the Packers, Brewers, and Bucks, rarely missing a game. He also
enjoyed fishing, hunting and sturgeon spearing. His greatest passion in life was planting and
tending to his vegetable garden each year. His family always teased him saying that a weed
dared not grow in his garden in the 45 years that he grew them! He also meticulously cared for his lawn, and both his indoor and outdoor plants. If it wasn’t for his very first surgery at the age of 83 in 2012 and subsequent fall that resulted in a second surgery in 2018, Dad would surely have still been planting gardens and tending to his flowerbeds at least until age 90!
George is survived by two daughters, Tracy (Mark Pusch) Rodriguez and Maria (Shawn) Larson, who had the privilege and joy of caring for him at home for the past two and a half years, since his last surgery; stepson, Grant Roesler; seven grandchildren, Amber (Paul) Bosak of New Jersey, Carissa Soter of Fond du Lac, Ramon Rodriguez, Alexander Rodriguez, Alicia (Alejandro) Ovalle, Kailyn (Caleb) DeGroot, all of Fond du Lac, and Alyssa Larson of Oshkosh; one great-granddaughter, Lily Rodriguez of Fond du Lac; brother-in-law, Ray Lakin of Fond du Lac; two nieces, Susan (Steve Fisher) Lakin of Portage and Julie Lakin of Brownsville; his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Gillian Durrant of Norfolk, England; and special friend and neighbor of 50+ years, Jan Hulderson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Stamatia; wife, Joy; sister, Angie Lakin all of Fond du Lac; father and mother-in-law, Major and Lizzie Durrant; brothers and sisters-in-law; Paul (Eileen) O’Grady and Alan (Alice) Durrant, all of Norfolk, England.
