Gustave A. "Gus" Kocos, 81, of 147 N. Park Avenue, died Monday, January 26, 2009, at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born December 18, 1927, in Fond du Lac, the son of Stephen and Catherine Elleftheriou Kocos. On December 3, 1949, he married Patricia Frimark in Fond du Lac. Gus was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Army's 11th Airborne Division where he made two combat jumps. He enlisted in 1946 and was discharged in 1978 after also serving in the Army Reserves and National Guard. He was a life member of Bohlman-Grimes VFM Post #1904, Trier-Puddy American Legion Post #75, a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the AmVets, life membership in the 11th Airborne Association, the 187th Airborne Association's Rakkasan's, and membership in the Combat Infantry Badge Association. Gus was also a life member of Eagles Aerie #270, and was inducted into the first class of the Fond du Lac Softball Hall of Fame in 1999. He was formerly employed by the Sioux Line railroad for 19 years. He was a graduate of Goodrich High School and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1967, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. He was formerly employed by North Fond du Lac School System teaching at Horace Mann High School. Surviving is his wife, Patricia, a son, Stephen (Cynthia) Kocos of Fond du Lac, seven grandchildren; Timothy (Kathy) Kocos of Phoenix, AZ, Christina Kocos of Fond du Lac, Rebecca Kocos of Minneapolis, MN, Julie Kocos of Fond du Lac, Kevin Kocos of Minneapolis, MN, and Scott Kocos and Stephanie Kocos, both of Fond du Lac, and three great-granddaughters, Karisma, MacKenzie, and Karma. He is further survived by his daughter-in-law, Maureen (Mark) Krause of Fond du Lac, two sisters, Helen (Alex) Makaris of Fond du Lac, and Mary Hoehn, both of Fond du Lac, and his former daughter-in-law, Kathy Kocos. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Jeffery A. Kocos, three brothers, John, Jim, and Nick, and a brother-in-law, Jack Hoehn.
Visitation for Mr. Gustave A. "Gus"" Kocos will be on Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 4 to 8 pm at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Family prayers will be on Friday, January 30, 2009, at 10 am at the funeral home and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Church, 232 S. Peters Avenue, Fond du Lac.
