Harold Roger Huberty, 95, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, April 17, 2016 at his home in Lake View Place in Fond du Lac.
Harold was born October 12, 1920 in Mount Calvary, the son of Edward & Emma (Voelker) Huberty. He grew up the 3rd youngest of 11 siblings in the family living quarters connected to what was then Huberty's General Store & Tavern, located on the SE corner of Fond du Lac & Main Streets in Mount Calvary. The building which housed the family business & residence is long gone, but in its place is a small parklike sitting area next to the community's National Exchange Bank.
In 1942 Harold heeded the national call and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a cook for the Seabees in the Pacific theater & was honorably discharged in 1944. (Harold maintained that when it was his turn to cook, the men in his unit would happily exclaim that "we're eating good today `cause Huberty is cooking!")
On May 5, 1945 Harold married Lorraine W. Abler at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mount Calvary. (He had once told his mother as a young boy that he was going to marry that girl someday.) Harold & Lorraine resided in Fond du Lac all of their married life.
Harold's post-WWII years eventually found him working as a mechanic at Westberg Buick on Marr & 4th Street in Fond du Lac in the 1950's & early 1960's; he then worked at Galloway-West Company (now Milk Specialties Global) on Tompkins Street in Fond du Lac until his retirement in 1986. His earliest years of employment were helping out his mother in the kitchen of St. Lawrence Seminary where she was employed -- only a short distance "up the hill" from the family home. This "culinary" experience would serve Harold well later on in the military and also in his future family life, as he was the main cook for all those family meals shared by the Huberty's at their 13th Street household
Harold was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and then Holy Family Catholic Parish. Harold was a devoted member of the church, attending church services until age 90. He sent his 3 children to local Catholic schools.
Harold was an eager & hard worker. Harold liked to reminisce that when he was a young man he razed the old family barn all by himself -- without anyone's specific permission! One daughter will always remember arriving home from school one afternoon to behold the sight of him removing all the wood siding on the 2-story family dwelling to prepare the house for new steel siding. (His commitment to any project he tackled was comprehensive, especially if it involved demolition.) Harold held strong political views, a passion that he passed on to his 3 children. Harold's children also enjoyed the meals he cooked for them as they were growing up. (He was a good role-model for the modern family whether he realized it at the time or not.) Harold had an appreciation for the look of a Buick (probably a result of his employment at Westberg). He enjoyed his various pet dogs over the years. He also was fond of the taste of chocolate & ice cream. Harold and Lorraine were able to travel together, after their retirements, throughout the United States before her untimely death in 1992.
Harold is survived by two of his three children: H. John of Fond du Lac and Mary (Steven) Te Stroete of North Fond du Lac; his five grandchildren: Jennifer (Geoff) Bogli, Kate Green, Zachary Elliott, Nathan (Jesee) Te Stroete, and Noah (Crystal) Te Stroete; and eleven great-grandchildren: Abigail & Jackson Bogli; Paul Jr., Emily, Madeline, & George Green; Maddison, Isaac, & Logan Te Stroete; and William & Kaden Te Stroete. He is further survived by many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lorraine in 1992 (it always bothered him that she had to die so much sooner than he); more recently his daughter Linda J. Elliott; his five brothers & their wives: Raymond (Irma Schaub), Clarence (Marie Berends), Milton (Marjory Frey), Edward (Marie Gilgenbach), and Joseph Laverne (Terry McMahon) and his five sisters & their husbands: Edna & Henry Stroberg, Josephine & Herman Gresens, Lorraine & Ed Beyer, Dorothy & "Toots" Blomfeldt and Marion & Bob McDonough.. He was also preceded in death by his brothers-in law Edwin, Gilbert, Gregor, Clemons & Leander Abler and his sisters-in-law Hilda Shepro and Joan Christ -- and all of their spouses. Harold never tired of relating the warnings he received from his family while growing up that he wouldn't live very long due to his aversion to fruits and vegetables. "They always said I was the puny one!" He ended-up outliving them all.
Funeral services for Harold Huberty will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. Interment will follow the service in the mausoleum.
Harold's family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Lake View Place for their great care of Harold while he was a resident these past 4 years and to Agnesian Hospice Hope during the past several weeks. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Agnesian Hospice Hope.
