Harvey J. Gendron, 101, formerly of 791 Security Drive and a resident of the St. Francis Home for the past six years, died peacefully Sunday evening, June 3, 2007, with family members by his side. He was born in Mountain Home, Idaho, on February 9, 1906, a son of Alphonse and Anastasia DuBois Gendron. He was raised in Escanaba, MI and attended local schools there. On November 6, 1929, Harvey married Della Mattson in Escanaba, MI. Harvey and Della were married for 77 wonderful years. He was a storekeeper for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for 47 years, retiring in 1971. Harvey and Della were proud parents of four beautiful children, who blessed them with 12 precious grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Harvey loved hunting and fishing with his sons. Harvey and Della retired to North Fond du Lac where Harvey enjoyed growing a vegetable garden, feeding the squirrels, bird watching, and playing with his grandchildren. Harvey was a regular at Presentation Catholic Church, where he was knick-named "our oldest altar boy." He also volunteered at St. Agnes Hospital for 25 years. He was often seen riding his bike around town until he was 96 years old. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #664.He is survived by his wife, Della, his sons, James (Nadine) Gendron and Tom (Jill) Gendron, both of Fond du Lac, his daughter, Joan (William) Slate of Markesan; 11 grandchildren, Anne, Jeff, Joe, Bob, Cheryl, Rich, Sue, Rose, John, Mark, and Tracy; 20 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jackie, his grandson, William "Butch" Slate, his great-grandson, Samuel Thomas Bahn, his nephew, Walt Wilson, his brother, Charles, two sisters, Laura Schwalbach and Ruby Olsen, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation for Mr. Harvey J. Gendron will be on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, from 12:30 to 2 pm at St. Francis Chapel, 33 Everett Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 pm on Wednesday at the chapel. The Rev. Dennis VanBeek will officiate and entombment will be in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Harvey would love to see donations directed to the St. Francis Employee Appreciation Fund.
