James “Big Jim” Schaalma, 85, of North Fond du Lac, died Saturday, May 21, 2016 at his residence. He was born April 27, 1931 in Randolph, the son of Albert and Tena TerLaan Schaalma. On June 9, 1951 he married Audrey J. Nelson in the parsonage at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waupun. James served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1952 – 1954 in San Diego and a short tour in Japan. He worked for Galloway West until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of Church of Peace in Fond du Lac and enjoyed fishing and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey; six children, Michael (Linda) Schaalma of Oshkosh, Shirley (Arthur) Reif of Stockbridge, Jeffrey (Cindy Dahlen) Schaalma of Lomira, Julie (Gary) Buell of Fond du Lac, Amy (Rick) Barbian of Fond du Lac, and Janet (Scott) Roberts of Fayetteville, AR; twelve grandchildren, Rebekah (Nathan) Miller, Aaron Schaalma, Zachary (Mandy) Schaalma, William (Lydia Parks) Reif, Anthony (Rikki Vogel) Reif, Benjamin Buell, Melissa (Jason) McCulley, Cole Klaske, Jacy Klaske, Meghan (Billy) Byrd, Sydney Roberts, and Logan Roberts; eight grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Schaalma of Randolph; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Peter (Gertrude) Schaalma, John Schaalma, and Theodore (Mary) Schaalma.
The visitation will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home with Rev. James F. D. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Ledgeview Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Church of Peace in James’ name.
