James L. Syms, 83, of Fond du Lac, died March 30, 2005, very peacefully at the Hospice Home of Hope. Jim was born February 2, 1922, in the Village of Auburndale, Wood County, a son of Henry and Lora Lemley Syms. He was a veteran of WW II serving with the US Marine Corps. Mr. Syms was formerly employed by the Soo Line Railroad for over 30 years, retiring on February 2, 1982. Jim was an avid hunter and loved to fish (especially in Rhinelander). He had a beautiful collection of loons, polar bears, and wolves. He also enjoyed collecting coins for many years, and had a passion for his model trains and circus trains.Jim is survived by four sons, Lawrence "Butch" Syms of Louisville, CO, Fred "˜Stubby" (Terri) Syms of Carson City, NV, Rick (Sandy) Syms of Fond du Lac, and Mike (Dianne) Syms of Fond du Lac, two daughters, Darlene (Sztaba) of Batavia, NY, and Nancy (Dennis) Blagg of Las Vegas, NV. He is further survived by 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends, including his first wife, June Syms DePriest of Las Vegas, NV. His parents, one brother, four sisters, and second wife, LaVonne Syms, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at 12 noon at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home with Sister Ann Jude presiding. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Agnes Hospital Foundation or the Fond du Lac Humane Society.
