James M. “Z” Zehren, 81, died Friday, November 19, 2021, at home in Fond du Lac surrounded by his family. He was born in Fond du Lac on June 29, 1940, to Richard and Loretta (Fleischman) Zehren. On May 7, 1966, Jim married Claudia Clohecy at St. Mary’s Church in Fond du Lac. He served in the Wisconsin National Guard’s 32nd Infantry Division, the “Red Arrow Division” during the Berlin Crisis of 1961, obtaining the rank of Spc4.
Jim was a man of strong faith that lived a full and fruitful life. Every year, he would look forward to pheasant season, golfing, and in his younger years, fishing. Z was involved with Blue Line Hockey for several years and enjoyed both watching and filming his sons and grandsons’ games.
In 1958, Jim began his career as a meatcutter with his brother, Cornelius at Buehler Brothers in Fond du Lac. He went on to become the sole proprietor of Z’s Quality Meat Market which was famous for his homemade Ring Bologna, Wieners, sausage, and prime cuts of meat. In 1998, Jim began a new career with the Oshkosh Post Office, retiring in 2012.
Survivors include his wife, Claudia; three children, Richard J. (Eva) Zehren of Jacksonville, Fla., Lisa Krueger of Fond du Lac, and John C. (Julie) Zehren of Simsbury, Conn.; son-in-law, Jonathon Pass of Fond du Lac; eleven grandchildren, Christopher (Jen) Pass, Alecia Pass, Janeé Pass, Adam Zehren, Jacob Krueger, Nathan Krueger, Aaron Krueger, Marissa Krueger, Lexi Krueger, Emily Zehren, and Brody Zehren; and four great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Mariana, Julia, and Mia. He is further survived by his siblings, Jeanette Wehner, Richard (Jan) Zehren, Harvey Zehren, and Pat (Jim) Moses; brothers-in-law, Mark (Joyce) Clohecy and Phil Clohecy; sisters-in-law, Liz (Allen) Neale and Rose Zehren; several nieces and nephews including his special hunting buddy, Dave Wehner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Dawn Pass; brothers, Cornelius Zehren and Sylvester Zehren; sister, Delores (Gordon) Giebel; brothers-in-law, Howard Wehner and Joseph Clohecy; sister-in-law, Pat Zehren; father-in-law, Gerald “Jake” Clohecy; and mothers-in-law, Margaret LaPierre, and Eva Clohecy.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home with prayers said at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:30 AM, Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at Sacred Heart Church, 200 S. Peters Ave. in Fond du Lac with visitation from 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM. Burial in Calvary Cemetery will follow with Military Funeral Honors rendered by the US Army.
The family extends a special thank you for the care given by the doctors, nurses, medical teams at St. Agnes Hospital, the Fond du Lac Regional Clinic, SSM Hospice Hope, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Also, a very special thank you to Dr. Robert Grass and Desireé. Lastly, the family is grateful for the compassion shown by Fr. Edward Sanchez of Holy Family Catholic Community.
