James R. Mathews Sr, age 85, of Oakfield, died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Hospice Home of Hope. He was born on March 9, 1932 in Ripon, the son of Harry and Lillian (Thorndyke) Mathews. Jim served in the United States Army in the Korean War from 1952-54. On May 24, 1952 he married Phyllis Frost in Princeton. She preceded him in death on April 7, 2009. Jim worked at Mercury Marine for thirty-seven years retiring in 1997. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, he enjoyed playing cards with the family, bus trips with family and friends, feeding birds and squirrels, and enjoyed being a jokester. He was a member of the American Legion Trier Puddy Post #75 and Eagles Aerie #270.
Survivors include three children, Barb (Gary) Stephany of Waukesha, Donna (Chuck) Merwin of Oakfield, and Jim (Michele) Mathews Jr. of Oakfield; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of fifty-six years Phyllis.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 2-4 PM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935. Funeral service will take place on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery, 686 Fond du Lac Ave, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935. Visitation will take place on Monday at the Mausoleum from 10:30 AM until the time of service. Entombment will follow the service. Trier-Puddy American Legion Post #75 Firing Squad will conduct military honors.
