James A. Ziegler Sr., of Lomira passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at SSM Hospice Home of Hope. He was born on November 14, 1934, in Fond du Lac, the son of Frederick Sr. and Clara (Tounzen) Ziegler. On July 3, 1953, he married Mable L. Rohde at Hope Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac. They were married almost 54 years before Mable’s passing on June 7, 2007.
Jim attended Fond du Lac High School. He was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard from 1952 to 1959 serving during the Korean Crisis. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 0347 of Lomira.
Jim was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ in Byron for over 50 years where he served on the church council for a number of years. He was a committee member of the Eden Chapter of Wings over Wisconsin for 20 years and Whitetail Unlimited for 26 years with 16 of them being on the Board of Directors and 5 as Vice President. Jim was a member of the Wisconsin Trappers Association and the American Black and Tan Coonhound Club. He was also a charter member of the Republican Party. Jim was a member of the Fond du Lac Motorcycle Club and was on the racing team of E.H. Tursky. He started riding motorcycles at age 13 and continued to ride well into his seventies. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. One of dad’s favorite pastimes was listening to KFIZ morning shows, winning probably way too many times on their call-ins and making sure everyone’s birthday was announced.
Jim worked at Mercury Marine (formerly Kiekhaefer Mercury) for 47 years. He liked to share with us the story of Carl Kiekhaefer standing behind him watching him work on straightening crankshafts and telling him he was doing a good job.
Jim is survived by his two sons, Jim (Jean) of Eden and Brian (Lyn) of New Braunfels, Texas; his four grandchildren, Jim (Melissa) Ziegler, Sarah (Nate) Heisler, Brian Ziegler, and Briana (Bryan) Selbo; and his five great grandchildren, Hadley Ziegler, Ella and Aubrey Heisler, Chloe Ziegler and Isley Selbo; his sister, Floralee Myers; his brother, Donald; and his four sisters-in-law, Larrie Mathos, Luelle Snyder, Tanna Schowchert, and Lydia Sudduth. He was preceded in death by his wife; his great-granddaughter, Lily Ziegler; his parents; his brother, Fred (Delila); and his best friends, Peanuts (the beagle) and Girl (the black and tan).
Memorials may be directed to Hospice Hope or to Bethel Church.
The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to Polly at SSM Palliative Care, Courtney, Kristy, Joyce, and Audrey along with all the staff at Hospice Home of Hope who cared for dad with such devotion and compassion. You all hold a special place in our hearts.
RIP Pops
