John C. "Jack" Mccullough

Dr. John C. "Jack" McCullough, Jr., 87, of 172 E. Division Street, died on Father's Day, June 15, 2008, at his home. He was born February 26, 1921, in North Fond du Lac, the son of John and Della Devine McCullough. On August 7, 1948, he married Dorothy Sauter at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Menasha. She preceded him in death on December 2, 2003. They were members of Holy Family Church. Educated in North Fond du Lac Public School through second grade, he attended Presentation School from 3rd through 8th grades. He graduated from North Fond du Lac High School where his activities included football, forensics, drama club, editor of the school paper, and class president for four years. He commuted to Oshkosh State Teachers' College in Oshkosh via the Soo Line Railroad for a year, and then attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with Senior Honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1943. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School Accelerated Wartime Schedule in June of 1945. Dr. McCullough took his internship at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle, WA and attended graduate courses in surgery at Cook County Graduate School of Medicine in Chicago, and at Dr. Philip Thorek's Graduate School of Surgery, also in Chicago. Returning to Fond du Lac in 1946, he joined his uncles H.A. and Joseph Devine at the Devine Clinic. During his tenure on the St. Agnes Hospital Staff, Dr. McCullough was a member of the Fond du Lac County Medical Society, the Wisconsin State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. He was a charter member of the American Academy of General Practice, and a diplomat of the AAGP's successor organization, The American Board of Family Practice. After the deaths of his uncles, he, his brother, Dr. Jim McCullough; his cousin, Dr. Joseph Devine; and later, his son, Dr. John McCullough, formed the McCullough-Devine Clinic. With the closing of the clinic, Dr. Jack retired in 1990. During his career, Dr. Jack was Chief of the Department of Family Practice at St. Agnes Hospital, Chief of Staff (two terms) at St. Agnes, the first physician appointed to the Board of Directors at St. Agnes, President of the County Medical Society, President of the Fond du Lac Library Board, and the first President of the Midwest Federated Library System. While president of the County Medical Society, with the aid of Mr. A.C. Exner of Wyatt Pharmaceutical Company, he organized and directed a countywide mass inoculation of all eligible school children with oral polio vaccine. Dr. Jack organized and began the first free physical exams for county athletes by county physicians and volunteer nurses and technicians. This program was begun with the aid and cooperation of Mr. Jake Gores, Athletic Director of Goodrich High School. He was commissioned an officer in the US Army Reserves in 1941, and held a reserve commission through medical school and internship until called to duty in 1951. He served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps in Germany. Dr. Jack was a life member of Elks Lodge #57, Knights of Columbus Council #664, North Fond du Lac High School Alumni, University of Wisconsin Alumni, the University of Wisconsin Union, and the University of Wisconsin Medical School Alumni. He served as a Licensed Examiner of the Wisconsin State Athletic Boxing Commission, examining and ringside physician for the YMCA Boxing Club and for the Fond du Lac Golden Gloves, and for several years as an attending physician at High School football games. He enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, woodcarving, hunting and fishing, and watching his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's activities, sports, and scholastic accomplishments. For many years, he was active in Boy Scouting at troop and committee levels. During those years, he received the Bronze Pelican and St. George Awards from the Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Bay Lakes Council Scouting Award. He was a member of the Archdiocese Speakers' Bureau and the Cana Conference Speakers' Bureau. Surviving are eleven children: Dr. John (Peggy) McCullough and their children, Amelia, Elizabeth, John, Nicholas, and Anna; Michael (Lorraine) McCullough of Fort Atkinson and their children, Brenna (Jim) Hughes and Megan (Brad) Berger; Mary (Bob) Koenigs and their children, Christopher (Annmarie), Michael, and John; Kathleen (Kerry) Perkins of North Fond du Lac and their children, Seth, Sarah, Erin (Rajiv) Yerra, and Colin; Patricia McCullough and her children, Miranda (Dan) Moderson, Megan (Ryan) Basiliere; Margaret (Timothy "Beezer") Ferguson and their children, Tony Ferguson (Erika Evans) and Billy Ferguson; James (Paula) McCullough of Madison; Maureen (Greg Beau) McCullough of Peebles and their children, Stefanie and Max Schumacher, Nicki (Paul) Batchelder, and Charlie and Mitchell Beau; Thomas (Susan) McCullough and their children, Ryan and Devin Rivera, and Alix and Emilee McCullough; Dorothy (Steve) McCullough-Pepper and their children, Jackie and Kelly Hansen, Stephen Pepper, and Kevin (Julie) McCullough of Presque Isle, WI; and great-grandchildren Della Ferguson, Delia Hughes, Ethan and Leyton Batchelder, Tatum and Olivia Moderson, and Malia Basiliere; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. His parents, wife, brothers John (in infancy) and Jim; grandsons Ian and Patrick; and great-grandson Elliot preceded him in death.



Visitation for Dr. John C. "Jack" McCullough will be held on Friday, June 27th, 2008, from 4 to 8 PM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 9:15 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home on Saturday, June 28th, 2008, and Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
