John J. Fuller

September 8, 1925 — August 22, 2018

John J. Fuller, 92 of Fond du Lac, died Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the Hospice Home of Hope. He was born in Osceola, Wis. on September 8, 1925, the only son of John and Mary (Narges) Fuller. On January 7, 1950, John married June Mateske at St. Joseph Church in Fond du Lac. She preceded him in death on February 25, 1995. On April 16, 1996, he married Marion Scharfenberg at Presentation Church – Holy Family Parish in North Fond du Lac. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2011.

Serving in the United States Navy (USN) during the Second World War, John attained the rank of Fireman 1st Class (F1c). In April of 1945, he was aboard ship for the invasion of Okinawa, the last battle of the Pacific Campaign. Following the wars end, John was part of the American Occupation of Japan. He was honorably discharged in May of 1946, having been awarded the American Campaign Medal, Word War II Victory Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

John will be remembered for the joy he took from his cars, especially his Cadillacs. In all things, he was meticulous; vehicle maintenance, lawncare, the upkeep of his home, etc. John loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, as well as with his close friends. He had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a good meal out. In July of this year, John’s first great-grandchild, Savannah, was born and he was able to spend precious time with her before his passing.

To provide for his family, John worked hard. He was a clothier at the Fond du Lac Store, and then spent forty years with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad (C&NW) as a Brakeman and Conductor. John lived in North Fond du Lac from 1963 to 1996 where he raised his children. After his marriage to Marion, he moved to Riverside Court in Fond du Lac, making close friends with many of his neighbors. In late 2017, he moved to St. Clare Terrace. John was a member of Presentation / Holy Family Parish.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Dennis) Lange of Fond du Lac and Sandra (Daniel) Bach of Germantown; step-son, Scott (Esther) Scharfenberg of Fond du Lac; six grandchildren, Chad Lange and Cari Lange, both of Fond du Lac, Kimberly (Scott) Woicek of Menasha, Andrew Bach of Nashville, Tenn., Kathryn Bach of Madison, and Megan Bach of Chicago; two step-grandchildren, Erin (Jason) Bastien of Fond du Lac and Todd Nutter of Milwaukee; great-granddaughter, Savannah Woicek of Menasha; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary; his first wife, June, and second wife, Marion; two sisters Florence (Field) Rahn and Margaret (Roland) Freund; a sister-in-law, Marion (Robert) Bunnow and four brothers-in-law, Field Rahn, Roland Freund, Robert Bunnow and Eugene Mateske.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM, Monday, August 27, 2018 at Presentation Parish, 705 Michigan Ave. in North Fond du Lac. Prior to the funeral service, a visitation will be held from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave. in Fond du Lac. Entombment in Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery, will follow the services. Military funeral honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy.
