John Edward Schneeberger, 77, of Fond du Lac, passed away peacefully at home on February 16, 2024, surrounded by family.
John was born in Fond du Lac on August 19, 1946 to Bruce and Jane (Perron) Schneeberger. He graduated from St. Mary’s Springs Academy in 1964 and attended the University of Oshkosh, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He worked for the Soo Line during college.
John served in the United States Army (1969-1971), first stationed in Germany and then with the 577th Engineer Battalion in Vietnam. After returning he met his wife Barb, and they married on June 15, 1974. He worked for the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development until retirement in 2007.
An ardent fan of auto racing and music, John was also a dedicated railroad enthusiast. He enjoyed watching trains pass through town, and built an intricate model railway which served as a lifelong project. He was quietly proficient at anything he put his hands to, from engines to household projects to helping with Barb’s gardens. With a sharp mind for details, he was a repository of knowledge about the people, places, and events in his life.
John was filled with love for his family and friends, and he cherished the simple pleasures of spending time with those close to him. Later in life, he especially enjoyed time with his grandson. He was unfailingly dependable and devoted as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His dry sense of humor always brought lightness to those around him. His blend of humor, love, and hobbies made his life truly memorable.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barb; daughters Sarah (Toby) Schneeberger and Elizabeth (Michael) Neuman; grandson Cormac Neuman; brother Robert (Rita) Schneeberger; sister Mary (Jack) Wirch; sisters-in-law Erika (Robert) Romito, Charlotte (Dan) Fatke; and brother-in-law Philip (Linda) Litscher. He is preceded in death by his parents and his mother- and father-in-law, Dorothy and Howard Litscher.
The family would like to thank SSM Health Cancer Care and SSM Health at Home Hospice for their compassionate care this past year.
