John N. Schommer

John N. Schommer, 87, Fond du lac, entered into eternal life Thursday, September 5, 2024, surrounded by family. Born in South Milwaukee, he is the son of the late Louis and Joanna (Stolpa) Schommer. John graduated from Fond du Lac Senior High School in 1955. He married the former Patricia Rife in 1958 at St. Patrick’s and she preceded him in death October 16, 2005. John’s entire career was spent with Bucyrus-Erie working as a standard cost supervisor and estimator at multiple locations including South Milwaukee, Indiana, Pennsylvania then returning to Franklin, WI where he retired in 1997. 

John’s life has been a story of service to others. It began with the love and devotion to his wife Pat who had multiple sclerosis. John volunteered in many roles including Eucharistic Minister for the homebound, phone volunteer, prison ministry, partner, lead visitor, “Circle of Success”, Spiritual Advisor for Holy Family Conference and Fond du Lac Regional Council St. Vincent de Paul (Sacred Heart Conference). Last year St. Vincent de Paul awarded John the prestigious Pat O’Hearn award for demonstrating compassion, a history of serving those in need in our community, a strong sense of justice and excel in integrity and humility.

John was a member of Holy Family Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting and all times spent with his large extended family. John was an avid Packer fan.

Survived by his siblings: Jerome ‘Jake’ (Margaret) Schommer, William ‘Bill’ (Ruth) Schommer of Fond du Lac, Cathy (Dick) Mackey of Alaska and Mary Jean (Dan) Malcore of Green Bay; sister-in-law: Sue Schommer, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife – Pat and one brother – Jim Schommer and nephews Jamie and Jason Burroughs.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM, Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Sacred Heart Church, 200 S. Peters Ave. in Fond du Lac. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, beginning at 11:30 AM. Entombment in Mount Olivet Chapel of Angels Mausoleum, Milwaukee will take place at a later date. 

Special thanks to his niece Mary ‘Sue’ Burroughs for her tremendous care, St. Vincent de Paul, Harbor Haven Assisted Living and the 6th floor medical team at St. Agnes Hospital.
