Joseph G. Smet, 83, formerly of 417 Pearl Lane, died Friday, May 4, 2007, at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born March 12, 1924, in Fond du Lac, the son of Joseph L. and Katherine M. Vieau Smet. On May 6, 1944, he married Lorraine Erickson at St. Mary's Church in Fond du Lac. She preceded him in death on July 3, 2001. Mr. Smet was a member of Holy Family Parish. He was a charter member of St. Louis Church until 1978 when he moved to Wild Rose where he was a member of St. Josephs Church and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus in Wautoma. He returned to Fond du Lac in 1998 and attended Sacred Heart Church. Joseph was formerly employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 41 years as a conductor, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed bowling and belonged to the Senior Men's League. He was a member of Eagles Aerie #270 and was a former member of Knights of Columbus Council #664. Surviving is a son, Robert (Nancy) Smet of Fond du Lac, three daughters; Suzanne (Dick) Pontzloff of Appleton, and Kathleen (Bill) Kellett and Mary Jo (Don) Asmus, both of Fond du Lac, 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Harry Smet, of Muskego, WI. He is further survived by three sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Brick of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Leona Erickson of North Fond du Lac, and Phyllis Erickson of Fond du Lac, and a very special friend, Marcella Groesbeck of Fond du Lac. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. His parents, wife, a granddaughter, Katherine Raymer, a great-grandson, Adam Comeaux, six brothers, and a sister preceded him in death.
Visitation for Mr. Joseph G. Smet will be on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, from 4 to 8 pm at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, and on Wednesday, May 9, 2007, from 10 to 11 am at Sacred Heart Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am on Wednesday at the church. The Rev. Edward Sippel will officiate and entombment will be in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Mr. Smet's name.
