Leslyn M. Shires, age 76, of Fond du Lac, died Monday, September 14, 2015 at St. Agnes Hospital. She was born on April 11, 1939 in Hartford, WI, the daughter of Elmer and Anntoinette (Rehwaldt) Schmidt. She was a 1957 graduate of Hartford High School. Leslyn then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison graduating in 1961 and achieved a Masters Degree from Columbia University in 1962. On November 17, 1978 she married Francis Shires in Barrington, IL. He preceded her in death on August 4, 2005.
Leslyn worked for many years as a Librarian for the City of Milwaukee. She then was employed as State Librarian with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction from 1980-92. On July 1, 1992 she became the director of the Fond du Lac Public Library until her retirement in 2002. She was involved in many community programs including, Altrusa, Fondy Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, the Arboretum, and the Fond du Lac Roundtable. Leslyn had an avid love for gardening, especially her perennials. She was continually helping others. She enjoyed traveling, visiting with her neighbors, and the companionship of her dog Daisy. Leslyn was a wonderful aunt to her nieces and grand-nephews.
SURVIVORS: one brother, Tony (Colette) Schmidt of Fond du Lac; two nieces, Dana Schmidt of Beaver Dam and her son Kody Kress, and Karen (Chris) Montag of Slinger and their son Nathan; and also survived by Curt (Laura) Shires of Roselle, IL, and his children, Heather (Joe) Martin and their daughter Taylor, and Kyle; and other relatives, neighbors, and friends.
VISITATION: Friday, September 18, 2015 from 4-6 P.M. at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935. FUNERAL: Friday, September 18, 2015 at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the traditional service. Private interment of cremains will take place at Rienzi Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials appreciated to Fond du Lac Public Library, Hartford Library, The Fond du Lac County Gottfried Prairie and Arboretum or any other charitable foundations of your choice.
