Lester P. Simon, age 101, and a resident of Lakeview Place in Fond du Lac for the past 4 years, died Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Grancare Nursing Home. He was born on February 1, 1914, in Marytown, a son of John and Rose (Gerhartz) Simon. On August 6, 1938, he married Kathryn E. Cherry. She preceded him in death on September 1, 1982. On December 1, 1984, Lester married Violet Wagner in Fond du Lac.
He enjoyed fishing and boating. Lester was a member of the Fond du Lac Horse Shoe club. Later in life, he enjoyed playing cards at the Fond du Lac Senior Center. While a resident of Lakeview, he enjoyed renewing past friendships while at the same time making new ones.
In his early years, Lester worked as a baker at Everix Bakery. He then worked at Giddings and Lewis (G&L) for over 3 decades, retiring in 1975. He was a member of IAM #1402 and the G & L “Oldsters”. He volunteered for the Elks Lodge BPOE #57 for many years where he was a jack of all trades; specifically maintenance. He was a member of Holy Family Parish and Eagles Aerie #270.
Surviving Lester are his wife, Violet; 2 children, Kathryn (Ed) Pahl of Fond du Lac and Bill Simon of Edmond, Okla; 2 grandchildren, Tammy (Jeff) Marquardt of Menasha and Michael (Gie) Kleineschay of Tampa, Fla; 6 great-grandchildren, Evette (Brian) McCoppin, Sara Marquardt, Alex (Tara) Kleineschay, Laura (Chris Prentice) Marquardt, Anna (Bryan May) Marquardt and Juliet Kleineschay; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 4 step-children, Kristine (Larry) Kottke, Kathleen Geis, Roger (Janet) Wagner and Jim (Diane) Wagner; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Kathryn; 2 brothers, George and Walter; stillborn grandson, Steven Kleineschay; step-daughter, Marsha; and a step-grandson.
A visitation for Lester will be held from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum Chapel, Ledgeview Memorial Park, in Fond du Lac. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM with entombment to follow.
One hundred years on this earth is a milestone for anyone. This man accomplished this milestone with grace, dignity, and an abundance of generosity and service towards his family, friends, and neighbors.
