Madonna L. Schaefer, 98, of Oakfield, passed away peacefully with family by her side at Hospice Home of Hope on Tuesday, October 21, 2014. She was born December 9, 1915 in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, the daughter of Will and Grace DeVoy Ryan. She was a graduate of Oakfield High School Class of 1933. She married Lawrence M. Schaefer on November 27, 1937 at St. James Catholic Church in Oakfield and he preceded her in death on February 21, 1974. Madonna was a member of Sons of Zebedee, St. James Church in Oakfield for 90 years. She owned and operated Schaefer Lanes, Schaefer Dairy and worked for Weinberger’s Market. She was an avid Packer and Brewer fan. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, embroidery, crossword puzzles, baking cookies and loved spending time with her family. Madonna was a kind and gentle woman who always put everyone first, she was a real princess.
She is survived by five children, Judy (Dave) Holz of Oakfield, Larry (Joyce) Schaefer of Fond du Lac, Karen Schaefer of Sheboygan, Ann (Ron) May of Fond du Lac, Bill “Dugie” Schaefer of Oakfield; two daughters-in-law, Kathy Schaefer of Wisconsin Dells and Susan Bird Schaefer of Oshkosh; ten grandchildren, Jeff (Mindy) Holz, Michele Holz, Therese (John) Krause, Christopher Holz, Paul (Jean) Schaefer, Jodie Ross, Joel (Erin) Schaefer, Darrin “Doc” (Cristina) Schaefer, Rob (Shelly) Schaefer, Eric Schaefer; 21 great grandchildren, Haley, Macy, Clay, Kennedy, Michael, Tyler, Olivia, Morgan, Michael, Mallory, Bryan (Kristin), Rachel, Aliese, Jack, Heidi, Kateleen, Caleb, Cameron, Steely, Dallas and Sierra. She is further survived by three sisters-in-law, Sylvia Ryan of Fond du Lac, Margaret Ryan of El Reno, OK and Joan Ryan of Oakfield; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence; one son, Jerome Schaefer; two grandsons, Edward Schaefer and Joseph Schaefer; one sister, Margaret (Alvin) Conger; nine brothers, Russell (Thelma), James (Mary), William (Olive), Donald, Gordon (Evelyn), Bernard, Dwayne, Eugene, and Frances.
The visitation will be held Friday, October 24, 2014 from 3:00 – 7:00 pm at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home and again on Saturday from 12 noon – 1:30 pm at church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Sons of Zebedee, St. James Church in Oakfield with Fr. Michael Petersen and Fr. John Schmitz concelebrating. Entombment will follow in Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorials are appreciated in Madonna’s memory to Agnesian Hospice Home of Hope, Sons of Zebedee or Oakfield EMS.
The family extends a special thank you to Fr. Michael Petersen and Fr. John Schmitz for their prayful visits, Dr. John Steiner and his staff, St. Agnes Hospital 6th Floor nursing staff, Oakfield First Responders, and to the staff of Hospice Home of Hope for their exceptional care and compassion given to Madonna and her family the last several days.
