Margaret L. Schmitz, 107, of Fond du Lac, died Friday, December 29, 2023 at St. Francis Home. She was born December 2, 1916 to Edward and Ethel (Kelley) Kelroy. She graduated from Fond du Lac High School, UW-Oshkosh, and Marian University. Margaret taught in elementary schools in Eden, Fond du Lac, and Oakfield. She married Herbert J. Schmitz on May 16, 1942 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Byron. They farmed in the Town of Byron. After retiring, she volunteered at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Lincoln and Liberty House, Loaves and Fishes, St. Mary’s Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, and FAREA where she helped establish a scholarship program.
Margaret is survived by her four sons, Chuck Schmitz, Gerry (Nancy) Schmitz, Jim (Barb) Schmitz, and Mike Schmitz; four grandchildren, Susan (Rob) Freund, Alan (Julie) Schmitz, Betsy (Rick) Acord, and Sarah Schmitz; six great-grandsons, Johnny (fiancée, Alyssa), Sam, Drew, Bennett, Jacob, and Christopher. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Darlene Kelroy; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert; father and mother-in-law, Peter and Susan Schmitz; brothers, Robert (Pearl and Delores) Kelroy, Edward (Shirley) Kelroy, and John Kelroy; sister, Rosemary (Donald) Schmitz; brother-in-law, Adolph Schmitz; and sister-in-law, Marietta (Stephen) Lewis.
The visitation will be held Thursday, January 4, 2024 from 9:30 – 11:00 AM at Holy Family Church, 271 Fourth Street Way, Fond du Lac. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Holy Family Church, St. Francis Home, SSM Hospice, or FAREA.
The family would like to express their thanks to the compassionate staff at the St. Francis Home and SSM Hospice for their care during Mom’s stay.
