Margareta P. "Greta" PetrovszkyMargareta P. "Greta" Petrovszky, 85, of W. 3852 Shady Lane, St. Peter, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at the Hospice Home of Hope. She was born November 19, 1919, in Willendorf, Lower Austria, a daughter of Karl and Franziska Schmidt. She became a nurse of the Red Cross and worked in different military hospitals during WW II. After the war, she visited a nurse's school at the Preyer'sche Children's Hospital in Vienna to become a nurse to care for newborn babies. Greta spent 3 years in Rome, caring for the baby of an Italian opera singer. He next job was in Sydney, Australia where she raised two babies from birth to two years of age for a family originating from Belgium. During this job, she traveled throughout the world with this family. During a trip to the US, she met her husband, Karl, who she had known from Germany, and they were married on May 24, 1958, in West Bend. She assisted Karl in his dental lab for several years, but she wanted to be a nurse again. She assisted at St. Agnes Hospital in the nursery where she was much appreciated by the staff as well as the patients on the maternity ward. Somewhere along the way, she discovered her love of painting eggs, not only for Easter, but also for different occasions like weddings, anniversaries, births, etc. In homes in Fond du Lac, and various foreign countries, you can find small collections of these eggs. Greta regularly went back to Austria to see her relatives; she even brought friends and relatives from the States to show them part of Europe and her home country, Austria, in particular.Surviving is her husband, Karl, of Fond du Lac, a sister, Charlotte Wondraschek of Austria, a niece, Heidi (Frank) Haas and their children, Petra and Martin of Austria, cousins, Horst Michaeller and family, and Franz, Walter, and Erich Lebrecht, and her close friends, Gisela Baumgartner of Chicago, and Jim and Barb Dehn of Fond du Lac. Her parents preceded her in death.
There will be no visitation or funeral services. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice Hope, 400 County Trunk K, Fond du Lac, WI 54935. Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is serving the family.
