Maurice D. “Maury” Nelson died peacefully with his family by his side at The Woodlands Senior Park on Sunday, February 5, 2017 in Fond du Lac, WI, just shy of his 90th birthday.
Maury was born on February 21, 1927 in Cedarburg, WI to Maurice and Alice (Livernash) Nelson. He graduated from Cedarburg High School in 1945. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines, serving in Hawaii during WWII. When Maury returned from the service, he relocated to Fond du Lac, WI and resumed working at Kiekhaefer Mercury. Maury married Betty Louise Bullen in Wilmington, DE in August of 1950. Maury worked for Kiekhaefer Mercury for 45 years as a Purchasing Manager and retired in 1989. In retirement, Maury and Betty spent summers at their cabin in Neshkoro and winters in St. James City, (Pine Island) Florida with life-long neighbors and friends.
Maury enjoyed woodworking and shared his projects with his daughters and friends. He was known for his sense of humor and generosity. He loved to camp with family and friends. He was an avid stamp collector, coin collector and bird watcher. Maury was a Charter member of Sacred Heart Church and ushered for 25 years. He organized the Thursday night volleyball league at Sacred Heart for over 40 years, meeting and enjoying the company of many good friends. Maury served as the secretary of the Friday night Mercury bowling league at the Arcade Lanes for over 30 years. He also served on the board of Marine Credit Union and was Chairman of the Board. Maury was a member of the VFW Post 1904. One of the highlights of Maury’s recent years was his trip to Washington D.C. on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight in 2011.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his four girls, Maureen (Leath) Sheppard, Kathy (Dennis) Reitz, Vicki (Tom Penfield) Nelson, Sue (Bob) Galle; brother, James (Becky) Nelson, of Fresno, California, sister-in-law, Violet Nelson and brother-in-law Ben (Peggy) Jeziorski. Maury was fortunate to have many good friends and neighbors through the years. Words cannot describe our appreciation to neighbors, Scott and Chris for their thoughtfulness. We are grateful for the exceptional care provided by the staff at Woodlands and a special friend Dan whose comfort to dad and the family was immeasurable.
