Nicholas S. Kohn

Nicholas 'Nick' S. Kohn, 90, of Appleton, died on Tuesday at ManorCare Health Services in Appleton after a short illness. Nicholas was born on Nov. 9, 1920, in Fond du Lac, the son of Nicholas H. and Mary Kohn. He was a 1939 graduate of Fond du Lac High School, and later was inducted into the U.S. Army on Aug. 24, 1942, serving in the European Theatre of World War II, including The Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged on Dec. 29, 1945, as a Technical Sergeant.On Aug. 21, 1946, he was married to Mary K. Flasch at St. Patrick's Church in Fond du Lac. He became store manager at A&P grocery store where he worked until 1967, when he went into business with Charlie Kilmer and formed K&K Foods. He and Kilmer owned the store until a fire destroyed it in 1976. Nicholas later worked at Rabe Wholesale as a salesman until his retirement in 1985. He then worked first as a security guard, and later as a crossing guard.This past August, Nicholas and his son, Donald, and niece Marilyn Flasch flew to Washington, D.C., on the Northeast Wisconsin Old Glory Honor Flight where he saw the World War II Memorial, among other sites. Nicholas was able to visit 33 states and seven countries during his lifetime.He is survived by three sons, Donald of Sun Prairie; James (Ann) of Oconomowoc; and Daniel (Sara) of Appleton; five grandchildren, David of Columbus; Kimberly of Oconomowoc; Jesse of Oak Park, Ill.; Jamie of Waukesha; and Rachel of Oshkosh; tree great grandchildren, Trentan, Konner and Simon; and one sister-in-law, Rosemary Koln of Fond du Lac.He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, five sisters and three brothers.



Friends may call on Thursday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 8 PM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, and Friday, Oct. 7, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Community in Fond du Lac. Fr. Maximo Tzul will officiate. Interment will be at Calvary Mausoleum Chapel in Fond du Lac. Uecker-Witt Funeral is in charge of arrangements.
