Raymond H. White, 88, of Fond du Lac, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 6, 2014. He was born on July 2, 1925 in Decatur, IL, the son of Hiram and Augusta (Lengsfeld) White. Raymond was a 1943 graduate of Fond du Lac Senior High. On October 21, 1950, he married Mary Mitchell at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. From 1943-1946, Raymond served in the U.S. Navy aboard an Attack Personnel Ship in the South Pacific participating in the invasions of Guam in the Marshall Islands and Iwo Jima. His ship was the first to enter many Japanese ports at the war's end to facilitate the removal of U.S. prisoners of war. After the war, he attended the Chicago Institute of Technology for a year and a half. He then worked for Shell Oil before returning to the Navy to serve during the Korean War from 1951-1953 as a boilermaker on a Destroyer Escort. For 41 years, he was the owner/operator of White's Petroleum Service. After retirement, he worked another 15 years for Fond du Lac County as a driver for the Handy Van. For a number of years, Raymond was Santa Claus to many local children. He loved to read. Raymond was also a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus #664. Raymond is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary, four children; Sue White of Fond du Lac, Jim (Lori) White of North Fond du Lac, Barb (Dan) Mauer of Oceanside, CA and Mike White of Fond du Lac, four grandchildren; Travis, Jennifer, Nicholas, and Heidi, six-great grandchildren, one brother, Donald White of Fond du Lac, a sister-in-law, Arlene White of Southern California, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Alfred, his sister-in-law, Jean White and his daughter-in-law, Laura White.
A visitation for Raymond will be held Monday, March 10, 2014 from 10 A.M. "“ 12 P.M. at the Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave. in Fond du Lac. A Liturgy of the Word service will follow the visitation at 12 P.M.. Military honors will be presented by American Legion Trier- Puddy Post #75. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Cemetery in Fond du Lac.
