Richard “Dick” M. Westphal, 82, of Fond du Lac, died Monday, November 3, 2014 at Hospice Home of Hope. He was born August 30, 1932 in Chicago, IL, the son of Herbert and Edna Franklin Westphal. On October 6, 1956 he married Esperansa “Essie” Hernandez at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Fond du Lac. Essie preceded him in death on August 2, 2008. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War stationed in Germany. Dick was employed with the United States Postal Service in Fond du Lac as a letter carrier for over 30 years. He was a long time member of Holy Family Parish, Fond du Lac and recently a member of Presentation Church, North Fond du Lac. He was a member of the Federal Credit Union board serving as secretary and most recently president. Dick enjoyed telling jokes and stories, he always had a new story or joke to tell. He always had a good sense of geography, he enjoyed traveling, driving, and flying. Dick also liked trains, playing cards, going to casinos, and loved spending time with his family.
Richard is survived by his five children, Ann Marie (Paul) Hanke of LeRoy, Sue Westphal, Mike (Nancy) Westphal, and their children, Angela and twins, Joseph and Tony, Patty (Jim) Hoepfner, and their daughter, Rachel, Nancy Westphal, and her daughter, Hannah “Schatze”, all of Fond du Lac; one brother, David (Phyllis) Westphal of Lawrenceville, GA; and his special friend, Mary Jean Schiller of Fond du Lac. He is further survived by brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Essie; one brother, Robert.
The visitation will be held Friday, November 7, 2014 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Holy Family Church, 271 4th Street Way. There will be no visitation on Saturday prior to the service. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials are appreciated in Richard's name to St. Vincent de Paul.
