Richard O. Hecker, age 82 formerly of Fond du Lac and a resident of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin, died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. Richard was born in Fond du Lac on June 8, 1925 the son of Dealo and Margaret Walsh Hecker. He was a graduate of Fond du Lac Senior High School and attended the Layton School of Art. Richards father a World War I veteran asked that his boys not be drafted but enlist which they all did. Richard enlisted in 1944 and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines on board the Landing Ship Transport (LST). Richard worked at Giddings & Lewis. He was very active in Fond du Lac area boxing and was a gold glove boxer. He enjoyed art, which he did political cartoons for the Reporter and some of his artwork was shown in some of Fond du Lac downtown businesses. He enjoyed traveling, watching boxing and collecting old boxing movies.SURVIVORS: two brothers, Robert (Joan) Hecker, Fond du Lac, Deitz (Joan) Hecker, Green Bay, nieces and nephews. His parents, a brother, James "Chub" and a sister, Joyce, preceded him in death.
Private family graveside services will be held Monday, October 20, 2008 at Ledgeview Memorial Park Cemetery. Trier-Puddy American Legion Post No.75 will conduct military graveside services. Cremation has taken place.In Richard's name memorials can be directed to the Wisconsin Veterans Home or the Disabled American Veterans.Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
