Robert L. “Bob” Brandenburg, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 14, 2018 with his family by his side at the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac. He was born in Moline, IL on March 21, 1926 to Russell and Gladys (Thomas) Brandenburg. His family then moved to Rock Island, IL where he began his schooling, graduating from high school in June of 1944. Upon graduation, Bob immediately left for the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF). During this time, he met his future wife, Margaret Dittmer, in Davenport, IA, where they were married on October 1, 1949. She preceded him in death on February 15, 2015.
After completing his service at the end of World War II, Bob returned to Oak Park, IL. He entered Purdue University, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then applied for a job at Giddings and Lewis (G&L) and enjoyed 37 years in various sales capacities in Fond du Lac and the northeast.
Bob’s position with G&L took him and his family east many times, making their homes in Scarsdale and Tarrytown, NY as well as Westport, CT. During this time, they made many friends and enjoyed traveling the states of New England as a family, which by now included their 2 boys, Kevin and Kurt.
Bob and his family returned to Fond du Lac in 1970, where he continued his career with G&L, until his retirement in 1986 at the age of 60 as Vice-President of Sales.
He enjoyed sports of many kinds. In his early years, Bob played baseball on the G&L team. He and his family enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing, bowling, golf, snow and water skiing. They took many happy trips by water up the Hudson River, sailing off the coast of Maine, as well as boating on Lake Winnebago, and throughout Door County and the North Channel of Lake Huron. Bob was a past member of the Fond du Lac Yacht Club, South Hills Golf and Country Club, Whispering Springs Golf Club, the Fond du Lac Elks Lodge #57 and the G&L Oldsters. In addition, he was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Fond du Lac.
Bob will be missed by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving Bob are his 2 sons, Kevin (Debra) and Kurt (Dawn); 4 grandchildren, Joe and Kelly Brandenburg, Taylor (Andrew) Limmer and Alek (Holly) Brandenburg; a great-grandchild, Nora; his brother, Jim (Doris); and his sister, Bev (Ray) Vallarta.
