Bob 'Mick' McDowell, 74, of Waupun, died on May 8, 2011 at home surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle of cancer but God needed him for His plan. Bob was born on November 11, 1936, in his parent's home in Waupun, the son of Bob and Johanna (Harmsen) McDowell. He was a graduate from Waupun High School, class of 1954. On September 29, 1956 he married Phyllis Micheels at the Waupun United Methodist Church. He and Phyllis spent their first year of marriage in San Bernardino, CA where he continued his ability as a mechanic since the age of 13. In 1957 he and his wife moved back to Waupun where he joined his father's business. Later moving to Madison Street and after his father retired he bought the business and moved to Main Street. He took pride in telling how his father and he fixed cars in Waupun for 79 yrs. After closing and retiring from McDowell's Amoco he worked at Home Contractors, Waupun Flower Shop as a deliveryman, and a driver for ESC program. Bob was an active member of the Waupun United Methodist Church for 56 yrs. serving as a past member of the board of trustee, an usher for many years, and on other committees. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, serving 13 years with one year of active duty at Ft. Lewis Washington during the Berlin Crisis. He was a member of the American Legion Post 210 in Waupun and always took pride in being on the Honor Guard so veterans could have the honor of a military service. He was a proud member of the Waupun Fire Dept. retiring after 40 years and was an Asst. Chief on the Rural Dept. for many years. Bob was a member of the Oshkosh Bosom Buddies Support Group (for cancer survivors), Relay for Life, Rock River Country Club, Wings Over Wisconsin, Fondy Vintage Auto Club, a collector of antique cars, was a past umpire, played Santa and a clown many times and delivered meals on wheels. He loved spending time with his family from their younger years by going to Green Lake on weekends and teaching them to water ski. As the kids grew, he loved watching them participate in sports. Spending time at the cottage, when he could get away, was important to him and he shared it with many by snowmobiling in the North woods. He looked forward to having pool parties in his backyard pool.Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis. His sons Scott (Kathy) McDowell, West Allis, Steve (Lisa) McDowell, Waupun and Mitch McDowell, Madison: grandchildren, Jennifer, Alyssa, Stephanie, Dylan, and Jared McDowell. One brother Jerry (Pat) McDowell, Fond du Lac and many nieces and nephews. A sister-in-law Margene (Ray) Willing, Wildrose, brothers-in-law Bill Micheels (good friend Dee), Texas, Clifford (Carolyn) Micheels Louisiana, and Fred (Jan) Micheels West Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
VISITATION: Friends and relatives may call on the family from 9:00 -- 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Waupun United Methodist Church, Waupun. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Waupun United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.D. McCarty officiating. American Legion Post 210 will conduct military rites.
