Robert E. Schmitz

Robert E. Schmitz, 88, of Fond du Lac, died on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at his residence. He was born June 21, 1936, in Fond du Lac, the son of Jacob and Gladys (Dame) Schmitz. Robert proudly served in the U.S. Army. On June 1, 1963, he married Sharon Caird at Sacred Heart Church in Fond du Lac. Robert was a member of Holy Family Parish (where he was a server and setup for church services) and the Fond du Lac Society of Model Railroad Hobbyist. He worked for Gerhardt Brothers Bakery, Morning Glory, and lastly, Wil-Kil Pest Control until his retirement. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed collecting stamps, refinishing furniture, making stain glass pieces, fishing, and going to the casino. 

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; four children, Roxane (Kevin) Kelley, Shelley (Steve) Flesch, Scott (Renee) Schmitz, and Stephanie (Shawn) Eisner; nine grandchildren, Meghan (Eric) Schmitz, Kim (Scott Preimesberger) Kelley, Taylor Flesch, Peyton Flesch, Jacob Schmitz, Benjamin Schmitz, Ally Schmitz, Eden Eisner, and Margaret Eisner; two great grandchildren, Harper and Hayden Schmitz; brother, Richard (Judy) Schmitz; sister, Helen Olson; special neighbor, Luann Hettenhaus; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Gladys; mother-in-law, Margaret Caird; infant daughter, Mary Schmitz; and two brothers-in-law, Larry (Sue) Caird and Wally Olson.

The visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM at St. Mary’s Church, 59 East Merrill Avenue, Fond du Lac, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 12:30 PM with entombment at Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery.
