Roland Frederick Hansen, who had a long and useful life, was accorded the invitation to live eternally in God's house on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Roland was born on May 15, 1919 in Fond du Lac along with his twin sister, Ruth Lillian (1998) and were the eighth and ninth children (six boys and three girls) of Louis Jacob and Alvina Wilhelmina Mattefs Hansen. His father, Louis, 50, a tannery yard foreman with Rueping Leather Company, died saving the life of a laborer, John L. Staples, 46, who survived, by asphyxiation with gas (sewerage) on June 24, 1929. Louis was awarded the Carnegie Hero Medal by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission in 1930. Roland was a 1937 graduate of Goodrich High and a 1939 graduate of the Fond du Lac Community College with a degree in business. He joined the United States Navy on April 28, 1943, served on the wooden mine sweeper YMS in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged as a Yeoman Second Class on February 18, 1946. On December 28, 1945, he married Kathryn Edna Millar of Fond du Lac, whose father Harvey Millar served as organist for thirty years at Immanuel-Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pastor John H. Becker officiated. Roland and Kathryn had two children, Pamela K and Jonathon R. In 1949, Roland completed a course in floral design with the Bright's School of Floral Design and operated his own floral shop in Ripon. From 1957 through his retirement in 1985, Roland was employed with the U.S. Army Reserve Training Center in Fond du Lac as a unit aid. His favorite hobbies included playing scrabble, tending his garden, playing poker and boating on Legend Lake, Shawano, Wisconsin.Roland's immediate survivors include his truest wholehearted soul mate and guardian, Tom Borysek, Chicago; his daughter, Pamela K. Hansen of Pensacola, Florida; his son, Jonathon R. and Debbie Hansen of Helendale, California; his niece, Susan Fiebig and nephew, Jaime and Sue Ciske Fiebig of Fond du Lac; his niece, Bev and Ken Fisher of Fond du Lac; his nephew, Brian and Debbie Fiebig of Appleton; his niece, Cindy and John Martino, Sammamish, Washington. VISITATION: will be from 9:30 "“ 11 AM on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church. The funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. David Pavesic officiating. Burial will follow in Rienzi Cemetery.Memorials are appreciated to the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home in memory of Roland F. Hansen.
