Sheldon Johnson Hewitt, 96, loving husband and father, died peacefully at his home on Friday, August 29, 2008.A lifelong resident of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, he was born on May 15, 1912, the son of the late Russell M. and Edna Bryant Hewitt.Following high school graduation, he married Evelyn M. Schmitz on June 1, 1935, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. Sheldon was employed at Fred Reuping Leather Company for many years. During World War II, he served a full-term in the Wisconsin State Guard. He retired from Damrow Company at the age of 73.In his spare time, his interests varied but he always loved a challenge. Gardening was the one hobby that lasted a lifetime.Sheldon is survived by his daughters Mary (Paul) Geier, Carmel, IN and Marcia Barrier, Fond du Lac, WI, and sons Thomas (Judy), Surprise, AZ, and Gregory, Waukesha, WI, twelve grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, 3 nieces and 2 nephews.Evelyn, his wife of 64 years, his son James and wife Ellen, grandson Michael Geier, brother Bryant and wife Harriett Hewitt, preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Presentation Parish, 705 Michigan Avenue, North Fond du Lac, WI. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.Sheldon will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Agnesian Healthcare Hospice for their loving care and support.
