Stanley D. Sommerfeld, 89 formerly of Fond du Lac passed away after a 10 month battle with diabetes and its complications on July 11, 2008. He was born in Fond du Lac to Bertha Louise (Schlaak) Sommerfeld and Walter Richard Sommerfeld on August 16, 1918. He graduated from Goodrich High School in 1938. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Fond du Lac. He joined the US Navy to see the world in 1939. In World War II, he served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatre and was on the USS Marblehead when it was torpedoed by the Japanese. After the war he married Helene Dumler in 1946 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac and after 59 years of marriage she passed away in 2006. Stanley worked several years for the SOO Line Railroad and the Kiekhaefer Corp. He worked for the City of Fond du Lac water department, following his father's footsteps, until his retirement in 1984. Stanley enjoyed fishing with his father and woodworking. Later in life he took up woodcarving to the delight of family and friends, including carving a whole baseball team for his grandson Kyle.Stanley is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Don) Schmutzler, Oak Creek, WI; a grandson, Kyle Schmutzler, Milwaukee, WI; one sister-in-law, Esther Rivers, Hill City, South Dakota; cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helene and a brother, Schuylar.
VISITATION: will be from 4 "“ 6 PM, today, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home and again on Wednesday from 9 "“ 10 AM at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Zuberbier officiating. Entombment will follow at Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park. Memorial are appreciated to St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
