Steve T. Athanasiou, 87, of Fond du Lac, died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at the St. Francis Home. He was born in Samos, Greece on September 3, 1929 to Thalasinos and Maria (Pitas) Athanasiou. He emigrated to this country with his family in 1947. On October 10, 1953, Steve married Joyce Graf in Oshkosh. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.
Steve’s life was varied; a shepherd as a boy, he would eventually become a machinist and retire from Giddings & Lewis after 30 years of employment. Following retirement, Steve lived to garden. His flowers and entire garden were a beauty to behold. Of all his accomplishments, his marriage of 63 years to Joyce was his greatest achievement.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; three sons, Al, Thal (Nancy) and Michael (Mary); four grandchildren, Steven (Amber), Matthew, Nicolette and Alexander; three great-grandchildren, Carson, Macy and Bryce; two brothers, Costa “Gus” and George (Sophia); a special niece, Maria Athanasiou as well as other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Daphne (Milton) Tembelis.
Visitation for Steve will be held Monday, November 21, 2016 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 198 N. Macy St., in Fond du Lac. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM with Fr. Ted Trifon officiating. Entombment in Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery will follow the services. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion, Trier-Puddy Post #75.
