Walter J. Gilles

Walter J. Gilles, 87, a resident of the St. Francis Home, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac. He was born the son of Joseph and Frances Steffen Gilles on July 22, 1919 in Mt. Calvary. On September 30, 1940 Walter married Isabel E. Buell at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. He served in the United States Army, Company F, 128th Infantry, 32nd Red Arrow Division and was stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre from 1944 to 1947. Walter received a Purple Heart in June of 1945. He was a member of Holy Family Parish "“ St. Mary's Church. He was a route man for Verifine Dairy until 1971, he then became the night custodian for UW Fond du Lac retiring in 1981. Walter enjoyed bird watching, sports; baseball, hockey and football, doing crossword puzzles and he especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.SURVIVORS: his wife of 66 years, Isabel; four sons, Peter L. (Mary) Gilles, Plymouth, MN, Walter Gilles, Fond du Lac, Richard (Debra) Gilles, Chilton, WI, James (Maria) Gilles, Woodbury, MN; three grandchildren, Mary C. (Rob) Schmidt, Susan (Randy) Crowder, Kate Gilles; four great-grandchildren, Callie and Laci Crowder, Kelcy and Kylie Schmidt; one brother, Leander (Marie) Gilles, Fond du Lac, and a niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.



VISITATION: will be from 9:30 "“ 10:30AM on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. A Liturgy of the Word service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday at the funeral home with Deacon Larry Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are appreciated to the St. Francis Foundation.Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
